Job Summary

The teller is the first point of contact for credit Union members. Under general supervision, but in line with established policies and procedures, the teller processes a wide variety of financial transactions, including requests for deposits, withdrawals, loan payments, monetary instrument sales, credit card payments, and savings bond redemption. The teller focuses on delivering exceptional member service while promoting and cross-selling credit union products.

Job Functions
  • Represent SMCU to the members in a courteous and professional manner while providing accurate service with transaction processing
  • Inspect all checks, bonds, negotiable instruments, and withdrawal requests to determine negotiability and verify customer identify
  • Process and handle requests for cash, check deposits, withdrawals, monetary instrument sales, loan payments, credit card payments, issuing debit cards, account transfers, and account maintenance
  • Responsible for secure handling of cash, balancing cash drawer, and reporting any discrepancies
  • Adhere to federal and state compliance regulations and to corporate policies and procedures for transaction processing
  • Contribute to a positive work environment and SMCU image by maintaining courteous, respectful and effective interactions, teamwork and communication with employees and members to enhance positive behaviors and employee satisfaction
  • Utilize active listening skills to assess member needs and offer targeted product solutions
  • Provide exceptional service to members while processing transactions accurately, efficiently, and handling inquiries
  • Actively engage in service and product referrals to affiliated credit union partners
  • Consistently work to meet or exceed assigned sales and service goals by cross-selling and opening new accounts, services, and performing account maintenance as needed
  • Process work in compliance with security protocols, internal policies, procedures, and banking regulations to prevent fraudulent transactions
  • Adhere to credit union security policies, including verifying customer identification and recognizing potentially fraudulent activity
  • Assist with dual control branch settlement procedures for vaults, cash dispensers, and ATM units
  • Assist with the branch opening and closing process
  • Prioritize continued education and learning by completing assigned coursework for product knowledge and regulatory compliance
  • Collaborate with internal fraud and security team to report suspicious transactions or fraudulent activity
Other Duties
  • Attend staff, departmental, and other required meetings and trainings.
  • Travel to conferences, or other professional development and networking events
  • Provide service to our membership communities by actively volunteering time to local civic and charitable organizations.
  • Provide support and work at other branches within the network as needed
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications, Experience, and Education
  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Six to twelve months of experience in a teller or customer service position or equivalent related cash handling experience
  • Solid mathematical skills for counting cash
  • Effective organizational and communication skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to utilize various types of office equipment including computer terminals and software
Computer and Equipment Skills
  • Foundational computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite and the Internet. Ability to navigate at a basic level within web-based applications
  • Use of Outlook email and calendaring
  • Use of online teleconferencing software (e.g., Zoom or Teams)
  • Use of transaction processing software programs
  • Use of calculator
