The State of New Hampshire, Department of Safety, Division of Fire Safety, has a full-time vacancy for State Building Inspector (Program Specialist III - 47-4010 BLDG INSPECTORS-3). This position has a 37.5 hour work week and is considered non-exempt.

Summary

Acts as State Building Inspector implementing the state building permit inspection program. Evaluates building, electrical, plumbing and mechanical permits and construction plans. Conducts building, electrical, plumbing, mechanical and fire code inspections.

YOUR EXPERIENCE COUNTS

Each additional year of approved formal education may be substituted for one year of required work experience and/or each additional year of approved work experience may be substituted for one year of required formal education.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Education/

    Experience:

    Equivalent combination of 7 years of education and experience after completion of high school. Education and experience must be in fire science, engineering, building construction, building code enforcement, fire prevention, fire inspection, fire protection, or related field.
  • License/Certification:
    Valid driver’s license
  • Other Requirements:
    Must pass a fingerprint based criminal background check and motor vehicle record check in order to ensure suitability for exposure to confidential information
  • Trainee Option:
    Not applicable
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Certified Commercial Building Inspector, Commercial Electrical Inspector, Commercial Mechanical Inspector, Commercial Plumbing Inspector, NH licensed electrician, NH licensed gasfitter, NH licensed plumber Fire Inspector I, II, or Certified Fire Protection Specialist or equivalent is preferred.

Responsibilities
  • Implements the state building permit and inspection program; conducts inspections of all new construction projects in state buildings and others as required in RSA 155-A and Saf-C 8100.
  • Inspects buildings and structures to detect hazards and enforces local ordinances and state statutes.
  • Reviews building plans for compliance with state laws and State Building Codes and State Fire Codes relating to the construction of buildings.
  • Conducts training programs for building and fire safety personnel related to building safety, electrical safety, mechanical safety, fire protection, fire prevention, and fire inspection procedures.
  • Confers with city and town officials regarding building safety, electrical safety, mechanical safety, fire protection and prevention laws, rules, and statutes.
  • Reviews building, electrical, mechanical and fire inspection reports and makes recommendations for uncorrected hazards, code enforcement, and recommends corrective action as required.
  • Performs code research and code analysis, makes recommendations, and attends meetings and administrative hearings as necessary.
  • Assists in the development of professional and technical building and fire safety standards under the direction of the Deputy Fire Marshal and according to departmental guidelines.
  • Promotes effective application of State Building and State Fire Codes.
