Role Description
AWS is looking to fill the position of Controller at our award-winning Hudsonville location. This is a hands‑on, in‑person role requiring strong accounting knowledge, attention to detail and the ability to operate effectively in a fast‑paced, multi‑location environment. The ideal candidate combines technical accounting expertise with a practical understanding of inventory‑based businesses and dealership operations.
The Controller is responsible for managing the company's accounting operations and monthly close process, ensuring accurate financial reporting and supporting multi‑location dealership operations. This role reports to the Director of Finance for the Company and will supervise 2 team members. Occasional travel may be required.
Financial Reporting & Month‑End Close- Manage the monthly close process across all company locations
- Prepare and review journal entries, account reconciliations, and supporting schedules
- Ensure timely and accurate monthly financial statements
- Analyze financial results and investigate significant variances
- Assist with annual budgeting and forecasting processes
- Maintain accounting policies and procedures
- Manage inventory accounting, including floor plan and reconciliation processes.
- Assist with manufacturer incentive accounting and accruals
- Support accurate accounting for trade‑ins, brokerage transactions, and intercompany inventory activity
- Oversee daily accounting activities including accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash management, and general ledger maintenance
- Supervise and support accounting staff and transactional accounting processes
- Oversee training programs and identify training needs
- Ensure accounting records are complete, accurate, and properly documented
- Manage sales and use tax compliance processes
- Coordinate year‑end CPA review activities and preparation of supporting schedules
- Support annual property tax filings, 1099 reporting, and other regulatory requirements
- Identify and implement accounting process improvements
- Support accounting and dealership management systems, including Lightspeed
- Improve reporting accuracy, efficiency, and automation
- Develop and maintain accounting procedures and documentation
- Participate in system implementations, upgrades, and special projects
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting
- Experience managing month‑end close processes
- Advanced Excel skills
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities
- Excellent organizational and communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a collaborative, team‑oriented environment and build positive working relationships across departments
Preferred
- CPA or CPA‑track candidate
- Multi‑location business experience
- Inventory accounting experience
- Dealership, marine, automotive, RV, powersports, or retail industry experience
- Experience with Lightspeed or similar dealership management systems
- Experience with financial reporting and business analytics
