The Certified Nursing Assistant supports the health, safety, and daily care needs of students enrolled in a post-secondary transition program. The CNA performs direct student care activities consistent with the student’s individualized health care plan and Individualized Education Plan (IEP). The CNA works as an integral member of the special education team, fostering student independence, dignity, and active participation in school and community-based settings.
EssentialJob Functions
- Responds to student health concerns and medical needs promptly and accurately.
- Maintains a safe and clean care environment, following infection control procedures and district health and safety protocols.
- Implements student IEP goals and objectives under the direction of the special education team, providing individualized support that promotes skill development and the greatest degree of student independence.
- Assists students in accessing community-based learning environments, vocational sites, and school-to-work transition activities as assigned.
- Establishes positive, supportive relationships with students while promoting independence, self-advocacy, and life skills development.
- Maintains accurate, timely documentation of student care activities, health interventions, and relevant observations in accordance with district and legal requirements.
- Maintains student confidentiality and upholds all applicable data privacy requirements, including FERPA and HIPAA.
- Manages student medications and coordinates with doctor's offices to ensure documentation is up to date or in the event of changes.
- Provides staff training on the different medical diagnoses in the classroom, including how to respond in the event of an emergency.

- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Active Michigan Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification.
- Prior experience working in a special education setting is preferred.
- Knowledge of basic nursing assistant practices, personal care procedures, hygiene support, and health-related protocols.
- Ability to provide personal care assistance with dignity, respect, and sensitivity to individual student needs.
- Knowledge of infection control practices, universal precautions, and health and safety procedures.
- Ability to recognize and report changes in student health, behavior, or physical condition to appropriate staff.
- Ability to maintain accurate records and documentation in accordance with district, program, and legal requirements.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively interact with students, families, educational staff, and related service providers.
- Ability to remain calm, patient, and professional when responding to challenging behaviors, medical situations, or unexpected student needs.
- Demonstrated understanding of confidentiality requirements, including compliance with FERPA and HIPAA-related practices as applicable.
- Proficiency in the use of computers, electronic documentation systems, email, and other district technology tools.
- Ability to organize tasks, prioritize responsibilities, and adapt to changing student and program needs.
- Ability to frequently stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, and move throughout classrooms, community settings, vocational sites, and program facilities.
- Ability to lift, transfer, position, and assist students and equipment up to 50 pounds with or without mechanical assistance.
- The CNA will work in a variety of indoor and outdoor environments, including classrooms, kitchens, vocational training areas, community work sites, and community-based instruction settings.
- May be exposed to bodily fluids, blood borne pathogens, communicable illnesses, cleaning products, and other materials associated with providing personal care; adherence to universal precautions and safety procedures is required.
- Ability to travel between program locations, community work sites, and instructional settings as required.
- Compensation:
Range of $28.15-$33.12 per hour commensurate with experience. - Full-time, school year schedule of 185 per year.
