OCCUPATIONAL DEFINITION: #115 - DIESEL MECHANIC, II/III
(This occupational definition is intended only as a broad description and will not cover many specific instances and/or revisions, when the employee is expected to follow proper instructions and in their absence, to act in accordance with sound judgment. Compliance with the Company's Safety Rules, Standard Operating Procedures, Working Rules and its Labor Agreements is assumed and required regardless of the individual employee's occupation.
Minimum education requirement High School Graduate or GED equivalent.)
- Operates, services, maintains and performs all types of mechanical and electrical repairs on internal combustion engines, and cars, trucks, semi-trucks, locomotives, and other equipment powered by gasoline or diesel engines.
- Must have thorough knowledge of theory of operation of internal combustion and diesel engines and their auxiliary components. (Such as electrical, cooling, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems, clutches, transmissions, brakes, etc.)
- Must have at least five years of verifiable fulltime experience as a diesel mechanic,
qualified to repair Caterpillar equipment
, and certification from an accredited Vocational Technical Training School required. Must own tools on attached page within four (4) weeks.
Must have a valid CDL license or must get a CDL license ASAP coming into the department. - Skilled in the use and care of all types of powered drills, grinders, hones, and special mechanic's tools.
- Performs mechanical maintenance on trucks, semi-trucks, cranes, all types of loaders, forklifts, pumps, compressors and like equipment.
- Reads, understands and is capable of following directions contained in parts lists, operating and maintenance manuals, schematic diagrams and other written instructions. Must be capable of correctly specifying replacement parts requirements.
- Keeps equipment logs and records as required.
- Serves as truck or other equipment operator when so directed.
- Maintains neat and orderly work area.
The Diesel Mechanic, may also be required to perform such other duties as authorized persons may direct, continues in this occupation by maintaining a high standard of performance.
