About the Position
The Electrical Substation Designer II is responsible for the technical execution of substation drawing packages, including equipment layouts, protection and control schematics, and civil/structural details. The role works closely with the Project Manager, Engineers, and Lead Designer to translate engineering logic into high‑quality deliverables.
What You'll Do- Coordinate with clients, architects, and other discipline engineers to complete drawing packages.
- Produce single line, relay protection diagrams, 3‑wire design drawings, cable schedules, distribution gear‑up, and low‑voltage panel‑board schedules with moderate supervision.
- Apply Rosendin standards for wire sizing, bus feeds, and protection for published schedules, and possess a working knowledge of feeder sizing and major substation equipment ratings.
- Coordinate with other trades (architectural, structural, mechanical) to complete substation drawings.
- Create installation details as required under the guidance of engineers.
- Use NESC and IEEE standards as references and ensure compliance.
- Attend project design team meetings and interface with the client and other disciplines.
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of intelligent CAD libraries (AutoCAD Electrical/SDS).
- Back‑check own work and that of other designers, supervising for accuracy before passing on.
- Maintain a growth mindset toward new software automation and skill development.
- Participate in site visits for field verification or project closeouts as required.
- Follow safety protocols and PPE requirements during onsite visits.
- Navigates technical disagreements with professional curiosity and a solution‑oriented mindset.
- Leverages AI tools to enhance design efficiency and workflow automation.
- Understand how a single change in a schematic ripples through the entire package.
- Own the accuracy of deliverables.
- Translate complex engineering requirements into clear drawing documentation and instructions.
- Drive for consistency in CAD standards to ensure a professional, high‑quality output.
- Postsecondary non‑degree award or certification in Engineering or a related discipline.
- Minimum 5 years’ experience as a Designer with knowledge of electrical symbols, layout schematic logic of substations.
- Combination of education, training, and relevant experience.
- Proficiency in 2D & 3D modeling including AutoCAD Electrical, Revit, and Inventor.
- Knowledge of Substation Design Suite (SDS) for Protection & Control (AutoCAD Electrical) and Physical Design (Inventor/Revit).
- Understanding of automated, intelligent design workflows and willingness to contribute to standardized systems.
- Fundamental knowledge of IEEE, NESC, NEC codes.
- Understanding of P&C logic.
- Familiarity with PDM software, Vault, Project Wise, Adept.
- Experience working within a structured Engineering Document Management System (EDMS).
- Proficiency in using Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.).
- Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks, projects, and changing priorities.
- Ability to work under time pressure and adapt to changing requirements with a positive attitude.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Self‑motivated, proactive, and an effective team player.
- Professional interaction with all levels of employees, vendors, clients, and others.
- Up to 10% travel (does not include local field visits).
- General work environment: sitting for long periods, standing, walking, typing, carrying, pushing, bending; primarily indoors with fluorescent lighting and air conditioning.
- Noise level usually low to medium; can be loud on the job site.
- Compliance with ADA and reasonable accommodation measures.
- Occasional lifting up to 30 lbs.
