Overview

Student Assistants work in a particular department of the college or the district site and have job responsibilities specifically designed for a student as non-classified job responsibilities. The role may involve unskilled, skilled, or specialized tasks in a variety of positions that typically require the use of manual, clerical, and public contact. Tasks are generally routine or semi‑routine and the assistant may work under immediate supervision or general supervision depending on the level.

Work is flexible to accommodate class schedules and exam periods.

Responsibilities
  • Representative Duties: Specific job duties are defined by the appropriate Division and/or Department. Considerable training may occur on the job.
  • Student Assistant I – Entry level/Semi-skilled: Work is under immediate supervision. Tasks are standardized, routine, and repetitive. Use of special equipment or software may be required per established procedures. The supervisor assigns work, controls the flow, and provides detailed instructions.
  • Student Assistant II – Intermediate/Advanced: Work is under general supervision. Work assignments are less routine, involve moderate responsibility, and may require access to sophisticated data systems and confidential information. The supervisor sets work objectives with less control over methods. Jobs may require moderate independent judgment, analysis, and decision‑making skills; a minimum of one year of experience in the same assignment is required.
  • Student Assistant III – Specialist/Lead: Work is under general supervision. Assignments involve a broad variety of skills and tasks that require considerable training. Roles require application of independent judgment and decision‑making; the assistant may direct lower‑level student employees. A minimum of two years of experience in the same assignment is required.
Qualifications and Physical Demands
  • Education and Experience:
    • Student Assistant I: Little or no prior experience or education required.
    • Student Assistant II: Some previous knowledge, experience, or education required.
    • Student Assistant III: Prior experience, education, or specialized skills required.

    • Skills required to perform a job assignment.
    • Limited independent judgment and decision‑making depending on level and assignment.
    • Ability to balance work and studies.
  • Student Eligibility: Must be a full‑time student enrolled in a minimum of 12 units at one of the three colleges within the Coast Community College District (OCC, GWC, CCC).
  • Note: Part‑time students may qualify for federal work‑study programs. Students interested should complete the Financial Aid application at (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below). and indicate interest in the Federal Work-Study program.
  • Physical Demands and Work Environment:
    • Representative of the demands required to perform essential functions.

Conditions of Employment
  • Students may not exceed 19.5 working hours per week during fall and spring semesters; a maximum of 28 hours per week outside of those semesters.
  • Students may not be employed by the District in any other capacity during the same fiscal year (July 1 - June 30).
  • Employment is contingent upon verification of class schedule, background verification, eligibility to work in the United States, and approval by the CCCD Board of Trustees.
  • Student Assistants are at‑will employees, have no entitlement rights, and are not benefits eligible. They receive no fringe benefits or pay for holidays or time not worked.
  • Regular attendance is an essential job function; failure to meet attendance requirements may preclude retention.
  • Students are mandated reporters under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and must comply with Coast Community College District policies and Title IX.
