Product Metallurgist

BASIC FUNCTION

The Product Metallurgist I and II are responsible for assisting in determining and eliminating the root cause of process and product non‑conformances, determining process route, practice design, and supporting operations, sales, and customers with metallurgical guidance for improvement and resolution.

NATURE & SCOPE

This role is accountable for identifying and solving metallurgical problems. The incumbent assists in determining and eliminating the root cause of non‑conformance found at the division and/or with the customer. The role reports to the Finishing Superintendent in Huntington, Indiana. It involves combining the efforts of people, equipment, and material to meet quality goals and standards while controlling costs within established guidelines.

Qualification for this role includes a four‑year college degree, preferably in metallurgical engineering or steelmaking, proven through metallurgical experience and a desire to obtain a technical degree.

The incumbent should have knowledge of grade specifications, customer and industry specifications, basic computer literacy, and must have completed the Product Metallurgist training qualification checklist.

Product Metallurgist Levels
  • Product Metallurgist I: G‑Future and/or 1‑3 years
  • Product Metallurgist II: 5+ years
PRINCIPAL

ACCOUNTABILITIES
  • Identify and solve metallurgical problems.
  • Serve as customer technical liaison.
  • Dispositions product placed on hold for quality issues or concerns.
  • Obtain all metallurgical, customer, and industry specifications.
  • Document customer requirements and process routing of quotes in the plant‑wide operating systems.
  • Coordinate & control flow of sales quotes in a timely manner.
  • Oversee trial orders with production departments.
  • Initiate Customer Claims when applicable.
  • Determine process routing for standard products.
  • Determine customer PPAP requirements.
  • Assist in resolving customer claims to support the supply chain.
  • Develop new product applications with GSN Technical Services.
  • APQP/PPAP/FMEA and CP inputs and reviews.
  • Support the quality system in audits and customer specific requirements.
  • Confirm root cause elimination and non‑conformance resolution at division and customer levels.
  • Follow department rules for safety, discipline, and work procedures within corporate management and quality guidelines.
  • Follow the Cardinal Safety Rules.
  • Complete all required annual safety and environmental training on a monthly basis.
  • Prevention, containment, response, and cleanup of material spills or assistance in cleanup in the testing lab or on the production floor.
  • Know, understand, and follow all applicable federal, state, and local environmental legal requirements and practices.
  • Develop working knowledge and process capabilities of other GSN production facilities.
  • Develop working relationships with key technical and operating personnel in GSN.
  • Be a self‑starter and exhibit high motivation to manage work and prioritize responsibilities.
