Job Summary

Implement school health services including chronic, episodic, and emergency care as well as health education, health counseling, and advocacy for students. Strengthen the educational process through improvement and maintenance of the health status of students. Participate in school-wide health and safety planning and promotion. The nurse’s appraisal, teaching, and consulting services extend beyond the pupil population to parents and school personnel.

  • Current CPR/AED and First Aid Certification.

Job Duties
  • Provide direct care as needed.
  • Support inclusion of students with special health needs, implement the individualized health care plan provided by the corporation nurse, serve as a resource individual for the multidisciplinary/IEP team, and assist with case management as needed.
  • Participate in establishing school health policies in cooperation with the corporation nurse, other school personnel, and community resources.
  • Identify and provide follow‑up care for children exhibiting suspected health problems.
  • Maintain and report accurate and complete immunization records on all pupils as required by state law.
  • Provide emergency nursing care for children when an illness or accident occurs during school hours on or near school property.
  • Administer medication in accordance with state law and school board policies.
  • Provide direction and consultation to designated personnel regarding medication administration.
  • Assist pupils and parents to comply with communicable disease laws and regulations; provide direction as a resource person in matters pertaining to health as teachers implement curriculum.
  • Assist in planning and implementing services appropriate for pupils with special health needs.
  • Assist in health education when requested.
  • Assist with planning and implementing emergency evacuation plans for students that are in a wheelchair or have limited mobility.
  • Maintain accurate and complete health records for all pupils.
  • Discuss the school health program with families as needed and encourage a close relationship between the home and school in all health matters.
  • Maintain a daily log of students seen in the health clinic.
  • Report suspected cases of child abuse and/or neglect as required by state law, informing building level administrator and counselors of the situation.
  • Serve as a consultant to students’ parents, school personnel, and administrators regarding health needs.
  • Assist Head Nurse to plan, appraise, and evaluate the school health program periodically and implement needed changes.
  • Notify staff concerning students who have special health problems as needed.
  • Confer with parents, pupils and school personnel when pupils are involved in illness resulting in absences that are repetitive or of long duration.
  • Share knowledge of principles and methods of providing an environment conducive to good sanitation and hygiene.
  • Maintain the clinic in good working order and order materials as needed.
  • Meet all aspects of the Classified Employee Handbook.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as requested.
