Physical Education and Health (Wellness) Grades 6 – 12
The Physical Education and Health (Wellness) teacher is assigned to deliver a comprehensive program in accordance with state law and West Virginia Board of Education and county policies and regulations. The teacher must hold or qualify for a West Virginia Professional Teaching Certificate endorsed for Physical Education and Health (Wellness) at the grade level(s) applicable to this assignment, per the job posting.
The teacher must also have or be willing to obtain Alternative Education Authorization (Form 38 WVDE).
The duties and responsibilities of the Physical Education and Health (Wellness) teacher include:
- Implementing the program of study (standards) approved by the West Virginia Board of Education and adopted by the county Board of Education.
- Teaching knowledge and skills in physical fitness, health education, rhythms and dance, and individual, dual, or team sports utilizing curriculum designated by the Cabell County Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities.
- Analyzing, demonstrating, and explaining basic skills, knowledge, and strategies of formal sports, games, rhythms, and fundamentals of body movement and structure the class so that learning occurs while students are being physically active.
- Working collaboratively with staff members and other physical education and/or health teachers in planning and implementing a balanced wellness program.
- Aiding teachers in understanding and implementing appropriate practices for physical activity, health and/or wellness.
- Providing individual and small group instruction in order to adapt the physical education/health/wellness curriculum to the needs of each student to encourage students to develop individual skills to the greatest extent possible.
- Establishing and maintaining standards of student behavior to provide an orderly, productive environment in the physical education areas.
- Effectively organizing space, equipment, and students for optimal learning.
- Providing appropriate safety instruction and making safety checks on equipment and field areas to ensure the overall safety of students.
- Maintaining care/responsibility for school-owned equipment to prevent loss or abuse making minor adjustments and requesting repairs to equipment as required.
- Inventorying equipment and maintaining proper condition and storage of equipment, materials, and supplies.
- Utilizing planning time, as necessary, for requested parent, student or parent/student conferences.
- Evaluating each student's growth in physical skills, knowledge, and contribution to team sports.
- Preparing for and providing opportunities to participate in school, local, and regional competitions, contests, and events, as applicable.
- Working collaboratively with other educators to implement and utilize common formative assessments.
- Actively participating in PLCs, collaborative teams, and grade level meetings.
- Utilizing county approved online learning platforms to post grades, take attendance, enter discipline, and post assignments daily.
- Establishing and maintaining standards of classroom management that foster a learning environment.
- Providing individual and group instruction designed to meet individual needs and motivate students.
- Maintaining professional work habits and responsibilities.
- Maintaining and upgrading professional skills.
- Meeting all professional responsibilities.
- Working in cooperation with the building principal and staff to support programs throughout the school.
- Collaborating with other teachers to meet the goals of the school's strategic plan.
- Utilizing instructional management system models that increase student learning.
- Communicating effectively with the educational community and parents/guardians on a regular basis.
- Completing and submitting all reports in a timely manner as required by law, the West Virginia Department of Education, and/or the county Board of Education.
- Reporting the presence of any situation that may be harmful to the health and safety of the students and/or staff.
- Implementing state-mandated assessments required by the state.
- Promoting, encouraging, and assisting with school-wide and community wellness activities, as well as any activity that promotes physical activity.
- In the event of a directive issued by the Cabell County Superintendent of Schools, instruction may be modified.
- Performing other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the principal/assistant principal.
