Physical Education and Health (Wellness) Grades 6-12
The Physical Education and Health (Wellness) teacher is assigned to deliver a comprehensive program in accordance with state law and West Virginia Board of Education and county policies and regulations. The position is for grades 6-12 and is supervised by the Principal/Assistant Principal.
Qualifications:
- Holds or qualifies for a West Virginia Professional Teaching Certificate endorsed for Physical Education and Health (Wellness) at the grade level(s) applicable to this assignment, per the job posting.
- Must have or willing to obtain Alternative Education Authorization (Form 38 WVDE)
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Implement the program of study (standards) approved by the West Virginia Board of Education and adopted by the county Board of Education.
- Teach knowledge and skills in physical fitness, health education, rhythms and dance, and individual, dual, or team sports utilizing curriculum designated by the Cabell County Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities.
- Analyze, demonstrate, and explain basic skills, knowledge, and strategies of formal sports, games, rhythms, and fundamentals of body movement and structure the class so that learning occurs while students are being physically active.
- Work collaboratively with staff members and other physical education and/or health teachers in planning and implementing a balanced wellness program.
- Aid teachers in understanding and implementing appropriate practices for physical activity, health and/or wellness.
- Provide individual and small group instruction in order to adapt the physical education/health/wellness curriculum to the needs of each student to encourage students to develop individual skills to the greatest extent possible.
- Plan practice opportunities that are structured for maximum participation (e.g. individual partner, and small-group activities, non-elimination activities, activities that require no wait time).
- Teach and/or assist with instruction in other non-core classes (ex: related arts), when needed.
- Establish and maintain standards of student behavior to provide an orderly, productive environment in the physical education areas.
- Effectively organize space, equipment, and students for optimal learning.
- Provide appropriate safety instruction and make safety checks on equipment and field areas to ensure the overall safety of students.
- Maintain care/responsibility for school-owned equipment to prevent loss or abuse making minor adjustments and requesting repairs to equipment as required.
- Inventory equipment and maintain proper condition and storage of equipment, materials, and supplies.
- Utilize planning time, as necessary, for requested parent, student or parent/student conferences.
- Evaluate each student's growth in physical skills, knowledge, and contribution to team sports.
- Prepare for and provide opportunities to participate in school, local, and regional competitions, contests, and events, as applicable.
- Evaluate each student's growth and understanding by assessing each individual's contribution to class.
- Work collaboratively with other educators to implement and utilize common formative assessments.
- Actively participate in PLCs, collaborative teams, and grade level meetings.
- Utilize county approved online learning platforms to post grades, take attendance, enter discipline, and post assignments daily.
- Establish and maintain standards of classroom management that foster a learning environment.
- Provide individual and group instruction designed to meet individual needs and motivate students.
- Maintain professional work habits and responsibilities.
- Maintain and upgrade professional skills.
- Meet all professional responsibilities.
- Work in cooperation with the building principal and staff to support programs throughout the school, including but not limited to, school assemblies, open house, parent meetings, ceremonies, and/or seasonal programs.
- Collaborate with other teachers to meet the goals of the school's strategic plan.
- Utilize instructional management system models that increase student learning.
- Communicate effectively with the educational community and parents/guardians on a regular basis (learning platforms, email, and phone).
- Complete and submit all reports in a timely manner as required by law, the West Virginia Department of Education, and/or the county Board of Education.
- Report the presence of any situation that may be harmful to the health and safety of the students and/or staff.
