This role is within Motorola Solutions’ North America Post‑Sale Engineering Department. The group’s main business is implementing mission‑critical digital mobile communication systems for Government & Public Safety Communications customers. Our team is part of the Mid‑Atlantic (T3) System Integration engineering organization with experts focused on system design who collaborate across all Motorola disciplines.
Job DescriptionThe Sr. Staff Engineer will be responsible for the public safety design and implementation of solutions for Motorola’s ASTRO 25 and adjacent technologies for State and Local government agencies. The position is remote with 25‑50% travel to support projects in the T3 (Mid‑Atlantic) territory, primarily focused on T3 South (WV & VA). The engineer will work with a field team of Project Managers, Systems Engineers, System Technologists, Construction Managers, and Customer Service Managers, leading technical aspects of the assigned project until system acceptance.
Responsibilities- Design and implement the radio network, including infrastructure, subscribers, mobile backhaul, WAN, and Customer Enterprise networks.
- Engage customers and consultants in design reviews, staging, acceptance testing, coverage and live system upgrades, and troubleshooting.
- Build, configure, and accept test systems in lab staging and field environments.
- Conduct radio coverage testing, frequency analysis, and interference mitigation.
- Handle radio system licensing (FCC/Industry Canada).
- Prepare system fleet maps, encryption schemas, and radio programming templates.
- Execute live system cutovers and upgrades.
- Document system designs and configurations comprehensively.
- Radio Frequency Engineering principles
- Land / Mobile Radio Engineering principles
- Wireless & Wireline communications systems
- RFDS principles, including antenna and cable selection, transmit combiners, receive multi‑couplers, and lightning protection systems.
- P25 Land Mobile Radio terminology and two‑way subscriber radio provisioning methods.
- Experience with Motorola ASTRO 25 architecture (plus).
- Site construction knowledge (site selection, grounding, tower and shelter requirements).
- Familiarity with Fortinet & Juniper firewalls, Nokia 7705 routers, Juniper SRX/MX routers, HP/Aruba & Juniper switches.
- Remote access tools (SSH, SCP, SFTP, RDP).
- Point‑to‑point Microwave systems and RF & Network design.
- FCC licensing and frequency search.
- Software integration, APIs, OS concepts, and the OSI model.
- Networking protocols and devices (OSPF, ISIS, BGP, MPLS, SIP, RTP, SNMP, NAT, routers, switches, stateful packet firewalls).
- Physical layer technologies: fiber, copper, microwave connectivity.
- Create design documents and drawings for project teams.
- Exhibit excellent troubleshooting, critical thinking, and analytical skills.
- Collaborate remotely with customers, colleagues, and third‑party service professionals.
- Manage multiple concurrent projects and shifting priorities.
- Communicate complex technical concepts clearly to both technical and non‑technical audiences.
- Learn and use company‑supplied software systems for IP network, radio coverage, and troubleshooting.
- Debug new software installations, review log files, and resolve issues with development engineers.
- GROL (General Radiotelephone Operator License) or equivalent.
- Amateur Radio Operator License or equivalent experience.
- COMPTIA A+, Network+, Security+.
$95,000 – $100,000 USD. Salary varies based on job‑related knowledge, skills, and experience.
Basic Requirements- Bachelor’s Degree in an engineering or technical discipline and 3+ years of engineering or technical experience, or 4–7 years of engineering or technical experience.
- Legal authorization to work in the U.S. indefinitely is required.
- Employment sponsorship is not available for this position.
25–50% travel required.
