Overview

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) - a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval - award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application.

Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Responsibilities
  • The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse - Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner demonstrates performance and leadership that is broad enough to improve the care for a group of patients.
  • He/she is responsible for the documented outcomes at the program or service level.
  • Program or service level outcomes must be broad and complex and can be demonstrated at any organizational level within a facility — Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN) — or Veterans Administration Central Office (VACO).
  • Major duties/responsibilities will include but may not be limited to the following: leading and organizing delivery of care to assure continuity of care and peer accountability for practice, including access to care and discharge planning.
  • Using advanced clinical knowledge and judgment to promote staff involvement in planning, decision-making, and evaluating outcomes. Functioning as an expert in clinical practice and/or areas related to the assigned roles and responsibilities. Systematically evaluating current practice and formulating outcomes for groups of patients and/or organizational processes within an area of expertise. Guiding, developing, and supporting staff from a leadership perspective. Using professional standards of care, scientific evidence, and practice to evaluate programs and/or service activities.

    Considers all characteristics of the individual — including gender and role identification, age, life stage, state of health, race, culture, socio-economic status, values and beliefs — in order to assist each patient with the improvement of his/her health status to the maximum potential.
  • Utilizes core elements of performance including knowledge and active participation in unit/service/program/VISN level quality improvement processes - such as the customer service program.
  • Promotes the medical center mission, vision, and values.
  • Complies with Equal Employment Opportunity programs, partnerships, customer service standards, and Veterans Affairs policies and procedures. Has advanced knowledge and skills in the assessment and management of the psychiatric/mental health and psychosocial problems of individuals and their families.
  • Scope of practice includes health promotion and maintenance, disease prevention, crisis intervention, management of psychiatric illnesses, patient/family and staff education, community referrals and the interdisciplinary coordination of care.
  • Is a clinical expert in psychiatric/mental health interventions including the prescription, renewal, and modification of psychiatric medications.
  • Participates in ongoing collaboration across healthcare settings with peers, physicians and appropriate others on the health team.
  • Provides psychiatric-mental health care to the veteran patients at VA Community CBOCs and Mental Health Clinic. Leads and organizes delivery of care to assure continuity of care and peer accountability for practice, including access to care and discharge planning. Uses sound clinical judgment in assessing, planning, implementing, documenting, and evaluating nursing care based on the American Nurses Association (ANA) Standards of Nursing Practice.

    Guides staff in the application of critical thinking and process improvement to improve patient care. Anticipates and recognizes medical/surgical/psychiatric emergencies and initiates or leads others to implement appropriate and timely actions.
Work Environment and Schedule
