Job Description

The Health Unit Coordinator reflects the mission, vision, and values of NM, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, and regulatory standards. This role performs unit-based reception, clerical, medical records, and patient registration functions. It is capable of setting priorities and handling emergency situations calmly, is customer-oriented, and communicates effectively with all levels of staff, patients, and families.

It serves as liaison between patient care units and other patient-related departments and manages the overall unit workflow in concert with the charge RN and/or assistant manager.

Responsibilities

  • Communicates appropriately and clearly to Manager, Charge Nurse, co-workers, and physicians.
  • Consults other departments to provide an interdisciplinary approach to patient needs.
  • Retrieves all lab results from the computer and brings results to the attention of the nurse caring for the patient.
  • Interacts professionally with patients and families, providing explanations and verbal reassurance as necessary.
  • Prepares medical records for new admissions and processes charts upon discharge.
  • Maintains proper record assembly contents in chronological order behind tabs.
  • Obtains necessary signatures and documents; aware of Petition and Certificate processes for Involuntary Admissions.
  • Transcribes and clarifies orders, enters and verifies orders in the computer to ensure timely and accurate delivery of medications and services.
  • Seeks out and obtains learning opportunities and participates in professional growth activities.
  • Demonstrates computer competence for order entry, results, documentation, and policy access.
  • Operates equipment safely and demonstrates flexibility under pressure.
  • Manages multiple high-level, time-sensitive tasks with confidence and accuracy.
  • Answers telephones, monitors unit cameras and intercom/door entry systems, and communicates information to staff or families as appropriate.
  • Uses critical thinking to prioritize and complete unit work as needs change.
  • Monitors patient type in the computer and makes corrections when necessary.
  • Performs pre-census and validates daily admission, discharge, and census lists; registers patients in the computer.
  • Conducts telephone screenings with appropriate disposition while observing patient confidentiality and Release of Information rules.
  • Orders supplies and prints forms used for patient charts.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
