Position: Announcement of Assistant or Associate Professor in Human Factors
ABOUT THE POSITION:
The University of Alabama in Huntsville invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor or tenure-eligible Associate Professor in Psychology. The ideal candidate will hold a PhD in Psychology and have an active research agenda in human factors psychology which may include: human-computer interaction, usability, UI/UX, human-centered design, artificial intelligence/machine learning, engineering psychology, human-systems engineering, cognitive engineering, ergonomics, and/or industrial/organizational psychology.

Other specializations within human factors research may be considered.

We especially encourage applications from individuals with strong teaching skills and/or demonstrated professional development related to teaching at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels. The successful candidate will teach two courses per semester at the undergraduate and/or graduate level (determined by the needs of the program), and will supervise undergraduate and graduate students conducting lab-based research in their area of specialty.

We expect the successful candidate to be active in the discipline and to teach undergraduate and graduate courses on human factors psychology, such as work design, human factors, task analysis and prototyping, and human-machine system design, in addition to classes related to their research. The successful candidate may also be interested in the many opportunities for cross-disciplinary research and mentoring with departments such as Industrial and Systems Engineering & Engineering Management.

Required Qualifications:

* Earned PhD in Psychology or a closely related field from an accredited institution.

* Demonstrated evidence of scholarly productivity or the potential for scholarly productivity (e.g., peer-reviewed manuscripts, presentations, external funding) in the area of Human Factors Research, broadly defined.

* Demonstrated evidence of successfully mentoring Master's degree and/or PhD students in Psychology or the potential for successful mentoring.

* Experience teaching university students in online, hybrid, and/or face-to-face models and/or significant professional development in teaching.

* Strong communication and interpersonal skills

Preferred Qualifications:

* Experience developing graduate and undergraduate curriculum and programs.

* Ability to collaborate with other units and colleagues within the university and the community.

* Experience in assessment and accreditation processes.

* Demonstrated grant seeking and securing grant funding.

* Active participation in pertinent professional organizations.

* Experience in developing, implementing, and building sustainable collaborative relationships with business entities and government agencies.

* Industry experience.

* Experience with accreditation standards in human factors and ergonomics (HFES).

Additional Information:
The Department of Psychology offers two undergraduate degrees, a BA with a concentration in psychological services and a BS with a concentration in psychological sciences, as well as a 4+1 joint undergraduate and Master's degree. In addition, the department offers the MS in Experimental Psychology with an optional concentration in Industrial/ Organizational Psychology, and a PhD in Applied Experimental Psychology with concentrations in Human Factors and Psychology & Law (PhD students minor in quantitative psychology).

Psychology department faculty focus on direct mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students. Faculty teach courses in many areas, including clinical, experimental, social, developmental, cognitive, biological, perceptual, industrial, and engineering.

Rank and Salary:
This is a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor or tenure-eligible at the rank of Associate Professor. Salary will be competitive and commensurate with rank, experience, and qualifications. An excellent and comprehensive benefits package is available.

Anticipated start date is Fall 2026.
