The key purpose of the position is to develop and maintain I/O layer software and support simulation development and hardware integration activities in support of the Exploration Upper Stage (EUS), Systems Integration Laboratory (SIL) Hardware-in-the-Loop facility (HWIL), and multiple Software Development Facilities (SDFs) that will be used to verify the integrated avionics system for the Space Launch System (SLS) at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC).
ResponsibilitiesThe Software Simulation Engineer is responsible for development and maintenance of I/O layer software that supports the software development and hardware integration in the real‑time HWIL facilities used in the NASA Space Launch System program at MSFC.
Some functions of the position are as follows:
- Design and implement the I/O layer software that abstracts hardware interfaces for ground systems, enabling reliable data exchange for command, telemetry, and control.
- Develop and maintain device drivers and hardware abstraction modules for sensors, storage, and communications.
- Maintain and upgrade the Operating Systems on real‑time hardware per software and project requirements.
- Conduct and participate in design and code reviews for I/O Layer software.
- Develop and maintain documentation for system architecture, interfaces, and operational procedures.
- Provide technical support during software development, software testing, and hardware integration.
- Collaborate with systems engineers to ensure integration of ground systems per mission requirements.
- Perform rigorous testing, validation, and troubleshooting of mission‑critical software and hardware.
A degree in Software Simulation Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field is required. Degree from an ABET‑accredited university is preferred. Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a minimum of a Masters with at least 3 years of experience, or a BS with at least 5 years of experience.
Desired Attributes and Skills- Intermediate to advanced proficiency in C/C++.
- Proficiency working with Unix/Linux (Unix‑like OS structure, file system, shell, secure shell).
- Experience in hardware‑in‑the‑loop test facility design.
- Experience in developing software to interface with data buses and standards such as MIL‑STD‑1553, RS422, and Infini Band.
- Experience with real‑time computing and operating systems.
- Experience in device driver development.
Office environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co‑workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (5%). Requires ability to work at a computer for long periods of time (100%).
Physical requirements:
requires sitting for extended periods in meetings and at a desk; ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and our facilities.
Equipment: requires ability to operate a personal computer and general office equipment.
Attendance: normal workday 7:30‑4:30, Monday‑Friday; minimal overtime (10%) may be required. Regular attendance required with arrangements for delegating duties.
