Position DescriptionThe space environments test engineer will support senior engineers to oversee test design, conduct test operations, and configuration control in support of ET20(Wind Tunnel, Environmental Test, and fluid facilities) at Marshall Space Flight Center. Space Environments Test Engineer will review test requirements, develop facility activation and operation procedures, and review test data. These tests will include Wind Tunnel testing, Environmental Testing, and fluid facilities testing.)
Test Engineer will provide test design documents and operational procedures for cryogenic and ambient propellant systems (hydrogen, oxygen), ancillary support systems (nitrogen, air, helium, hydraulics), and mechanical systems (thrust reaction, thrust measurement, structural loads).
- Work with a diverse team of civil servants and contractors to design, develop, setup, and perform propulsion and structural testing on space flight qualification hardware, and other mission critical hardware.
- Participate in safety meetings, task meetings, design reviews, and test readiness reviews as requested to support ASED and customer requirements.
- Develop and deliver reports and presentations as requested to support ASED and customer requirements via Power Point and other various software packages.
- Perform safety and certification training to support ASED and customer requirements.
Educational qualifications:
Prefer a Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering student from an ABET accredited institution at the junior/senior level.
The ideal candidate will be an engineer with the following skills- Experience with Microsoft Office products such as PowerPoint, Excel, and Word.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Basic knowledge of fluids and fluid dynamics of in compressible liquids (water, hydraulics). Some knowledge of compressible gases and compressible gas dynamics (nitrogen, air, helium, hydrogen).
- Basic thermodynamics related to propulsion test systems (heat exchangers, cryogenic fluids, heat and energy cycles, etc.).
- Basic knowledge of mechanical structures and stress analysis of these structures.
- Familiarity with OSHA and ANSI standards.
- Familiarity with standard engineering practices, familiar with current steel design and welding codes and techniques (including welded and bolted connections), knowledgeable about industry-standard, vendor-supplied structural and mechanical components such as structural steel and aluminum shapes, steel fasteners, pipe and pipe components, tubing and fittings, hydraulic cylinders, screw jacks, hoisting equipment, etc.
