Amentum Space Exploration Division is currently interviewing candidates for a Senior Electrical Design/Avionics Integration Engineer to contribute to humanity’s return & exploration of the Moon, and then onto Mars! The position supports our NASA customer / ESSCA contract located within MSFC in Huntsville, AL.
Description of DutiesThe Electrical Design/Avionics Integration Engineer supports the NASA Space Launch System (SLS) Hardware‑in‑the‑Loop (HWIL) labs and System Emulator equipment from Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. The labs include the System Integration and Test Facility (SITF), Systems Integration Laboratory (SIL), and multiple Software Development Facilities (SDFs) used to verify the integrated avionics and software systems for the SLS rocket. This position also includes support for upper stage integration and ground systems integration.
Collectively these labs are known as the Integrated Avionics Test Facilities (IATF). The System Emulators replicate key system level functions and interfaces for NASA manned space flight systems integration activities across the United States.
- Work in a small team environment to develop SLS HWIL labs
- Architect macro & micro electrical/avionics integration hardware and interconnect solutions to support evolution of SLS HWIL system capabilities
- Communicate risks, issues and solutions to peers with various technical backgrounds and areas of expertise
- Create technical documentation including problem assessment/analysis, test data evaluation, problem‑resolution reports
- Present and defend analyses and reports during peer level reviews
- Perform data interpretation, assessment, and analysis of integrated electrical/avionics systems
- Communicate written and verbal insights and observations of performance of integrated systems
A degree in Electrical, Aerospace, or Computer Engineering or a related technical discipline. A degree from an ABET accredited university is preferred. Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a Ph.D., with a minimum 4 years of experience, MS with at least 8 years of experience, or BS with at least 10 years of experience.
Must have excellent written and oral technical communication skills – must be able to clearly define and describe a technical subject to peers across various engineering disciplines.
Demonstrated ability to work with a team of diverse individuals and reach group consensus on technical topics.
Additional Technical Requirements- Significant experience with hardware‑in‑the‑loop laboratories and broad technical capability to integrate real‑time HWIL systems across multiple avionics boxes and subsystems
- Electrical control and electrical power systems design, integration & test for launch vehicles, aircraft, satellites, or payloads
- Experience in full lifecycle PCB design including requirement collection, schematic capture, component selection, and PCB layout with focus on signal integrity, power integrity, grounding, and EMI/EMC mitigation; performed circuit analysis, simulation, and troubleshooting using tools such as PSpice, LTSpice, or equivalent
- Read and interpret avionics architecture diagrams, cable interconnect diagrams, and associated system schematics
- Electrical/electronic systems and component operational knowledge including foundational R/L/C/Diode/BJT/FET components and devices such as op‑amps, instrumentation amplifiers, opto‑isolators, A/Ds, D/As
- Previous experience with aerospace system design (space launch vehicles, spacecraft, missile systems, aircraft) from system specification through detailed design
- Previous experience assessing avionics system behavior and performing test design, execution, data collection, and analysis for complex aerospace systems
- Integration and/or simulation of sensors such as pressure transducers, RTDs, thermocouples, accelerometers, and electronic simulation of solenoid valves, servo valves, or electromechanical actuators
- Working knowledge of digital communication technologies such as MIL‑STD 1553B, RS‑422, and RS‑485
- Working knowledge of data acquisition systems, preferably real‑time systems
Proof of U.S. Citizenship is required.
