Job Overview
Our Structural & Mechanical Design and Analysis team is a high‑performing group executing challenging tasks for the insight, design, and analysis of the Space Launch System (SLS). We also support other space‑related missions, including the Human Landing Systems (HLS) and more. This work is a critical step in our mission of sending humans to the Moon, Mars, and beyond.
Key Responsibilities- Provide structural and mechanical design support for flight hardware, including adapters, secondary structures, secondary payload support, thermal protection systems, electrical interfaces, and isolation hardware between vehicle compartments.
- Model large assemblies and subassemblies for the SLS program and other new and existing spaceflight programs.
- Manage large CAD files using Product Data Management (PDM) systems.
- Support the development, review, and implementation of changes in SLS program documentation by gathering information and presenting to governing boards.
- Participate in reviews, meetings, technical interchange meetings, boards, working groups, and trade studies related to hardware design and development.
- A bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related field (ABET‑accredited) with 0–5 years of experience, or a master’s degree with 0–3 years of experience.
- Familiarity with launch vehicle systems.
- Experience with structural design methods, test methodology, material behavior, and fabrication methods.
- Proficiency in interpreting engineering drawings and design tolerances.
- Ability to use PTC Creo 9.0 or newer to create detailed drawings per ASME Y14.100‑2000 and/or GDRM.
- Apply best CAD practices for robust development of PTC Creo drawings, assemblies, and models.
- Use product definition created with digital product definition/model‑based design practices per ASME Y14.41.
- Familiarity with engineering drawing and model review and release processes.
- Fluency with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing per ASME Y14.5, including tolerance stack‑up analysis.
- Experience with PTC Windchill PLM/PDM preferred.
- Capable of functioning in a multi‑disciplinary team of engineers with expertise in aerospace, manufacturing, structural test equipment, and test hardware.
- Capable of working with external teams such as main propulsion systems, reaction control systems, quality control, ground support systems, safety, and system engineering and integration.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, Outlook).
- Proof of U.S. citizenship is required.
Physical Requirements
- Work in an office environment with clear, concise communication both verbally and in writing (100%).
- Interact professionally with co‑workers, management, and clients (100%).
- Travel domestically within the USA (5%).
- Work at a computer for long periods of time (100%).
- Sitting for extended periods in meetings and at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (90%).
- Use stairs or elevators to access multiple floors and buildings (10%).
- Operate personal computer, telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).
Normal workday 7:30‑4:30, Monday through Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones.
Other Essential FunctionsThe ability to work independently with minimal supervision, make rational decisions, and exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk or hazard.
