Responsibilities
As a thermal analyst you will support the MSFC Space Systems Department in technical activities for the development of space systems hardware, performing thermal analysis for flight hardware systems. Your work will support existing programs at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) including Human Landing System, International Space Station (Environmental Variable Controls and Experimental Payloads), and Space Launch System (Avionics, Thermal/Fluids Support).
You will be expected to contribute to the development, test, and certification of space systems hardware for a wide variety of NASA’s ongoing and future projects. You will provide technical support in the thermal analysis evaluation of Environmental Control Life Support Systems equipment.
- Develop and execute detailed thermal models for spaceflight hardware and instruments
- Perform transient and steady-state thermal analyses using tools such as Thermal Desktop
, Sinda/Fluint
, ANSYS
, or equivalent - Define thermal requirements at the subsystem and system levels
- Conduct thermal verification planning, including test planning, correlation, and model updates
- Review design artifacts to ensure compliance with thermal and system requirements
- Interface with mechanical, structural, fluids, and systems engineering teams to develop integrated solutions
- Develop formal thermal analysis packages of evaluated systems documenting predicted results for project/program management at milestone reviews. Packages of technical documentation may include analysis reports, verification matrices, and presentation material
- Participate in technical interchange meetings, design reviews, hazard analysis discussions, and project planning sessions
- Work within a team of fellow analysts while interfacing with program stakeholders and leaders
- Support troubleshooting of hardware non-conformances related to thermal behavior
- Collaborate with outside vendors and personnel from other NASA centers in the development of integrated flight hardware
- BS degree (MS or PhD preferred) from an ABET accredited institution in Mechanical, Chemical, or Aerospace Engineering; or related field with an emphasis in heat transfer or thermal analysis
- 10+ years of experience in the application of finite element methods using thermal desktop code and empirical closed-form thermal analysis techniques
- Experience conducting assessments and verification of spaceflight equipment
- 10+ years of experience of thermal testing
- Experience as technical lead of projects throughout the entire design development, manufacture, and operational stages
- Knowledge of orbital thermal environment development
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office products such as PowerPoint, Excel, and Word
- Mentoring experience of junior thermal analysts
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Proof of U.S. Citizenship is required
- 15+ years of experience in the application of finite element methods using thermal desktop code and empirical closed-form thermal analysis techniques
- Knowledge of NASA and MSFC standards and specifications as well as experience with the design and analysis of thermal systems
- Proficiency with thermal test set up support
