Sr. Principal Structural Engineer

Location:

What You Will Get To Do

The ideal candidate is a team player and a strong independent contributor with leadership, problem‑solving, communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills, plus a proactive, detail‑oriented approach.

  • Analyze, research, and develop structural engineering specifications involving metals, non‑metallic or composite structural materials for product design, or operation of product to include structures, mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and electronics, power plant, armament, heating and ventilating, equipment and maintenance designs.
  • Analyze damage tolerance, durability, design allowables and structural modeling. Specialties may include dynamics and loads, stability, stress fatigue, and thermal analysis.
  • Use tools such as CATIA, IDEAS, Pro Engineer and various software applications.
Primary Responsibilities
  • Provide technical contributions to the Advanced Programs Missile Subsystem team for conceptual and preliminary design and technology maturation of new advanced concepts for future deterrence needs in the areas of cruise missiles and support systems/subsystems.
  • Develop design concepts for launcher capsule and provide technical oversight for avionics and airframe design, focusing on minimizing impacts to Navy operations and re‑use of existing launch systems.
  • Contribute to trade studies, architecture development, and system engineering, including producibility and affordability design influence, to produce credible conceptual and preliminary weapon system designs that meet potential customers’ performance, cost, schedule, and risk thresholds while informing design space for capability considerations.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to ethics and integrity, and the capability to innovate while challenging traditional ways of doing business.
  • Operate in an advanced design environment and collaborate across the Division and suppliers as required to accomplish team goals.
  • Conceptualize and mature new business for growth of the Division.
  • Transition innovative solutions, technologies, and advanced concepts for US strategic deterrence interests to programs of record for product development and fielding.

This position’s standard work schedule is a 9/80. The 9/80 schedule allows employees who work a nine‑hour day Monday through Thursday to take every other Friday off.

Basic Qualifications
  • 8 years with a Bachelor’s in Science; 6 years with a Master’s; 4 years with a Ph.D.
  • U.S. Citizen with an active DoD Secret clearance with investigation date within 6 years.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Top Secret Clearance and SAP approval within a reasonable period.
  • Experience running dynamic and static analysis.
  • Experience with FEA stress/load analysis tools such as ANSYS, FEMAP (w/Nastran).
  • Collaboration with adjacent disciplines (Systems Engineering, Design, Test) in a highly integrated team environment.
  • Proficiency in MATLAB or Python for analysis and data manipulation.
  • Proficient writer and verbal communicator of technical content.
  • Navigation through NX 3D models and CPLM.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Active DoD Top Secret Clearance.
  • Advanced or expert proficiency with ANSYS.
  • Exposure to structural test applications.
  • Exposure to missile and weapon system program requirements.
  • Exposure to propulsion systems analysis.
  • Team Center CPLM experience.
