Description:This position is part of the Amentum Space Exploration Division (ASED) support to the NASA EM32 Welding & Manufacturing (W&M) team under the Engineering Services and Science Capability Augmentation (ESSCA) contract to the NASA MSFC Engineering Directorate. The primary focus of this position is manufacturing large aluminum aerospace structures using fusion welding and friction stir welding processes. This is a welding engineering position.
Education and experience relevant to this position will be evaluated from that perspective. The position's primary responsibilities are to:
Develop welding techniques, procedures, and application of welding equipment to problems involving fabrication of metals, utilizing knowledge of production specifications, properties and characteristics of metals and metal alloys, and engineering principles. Conduct research and development investigations to develop and test new welding processes and procedures, improve existing or develop new welding equipment, develop new or modify current welding methods, techniques, and procedures, discover new patterns of welding phenomena, or to correlate and substantiate hypotheses.
Prepare technical reports resulting from research and development. Establish welding procedures to guide production and welding personnel relating to specification restrictions, material processes, pre- and post-weld heating requirements which involve use of complex alloys, unusual fabrication methods and welding of critical joints. Evaluate new developments in welding field for possible application to current welding problems or production processes. Direct and coordinate technical personnel in performing inspections to ensure workers' compliance with established welding procedures, restrictions, and standards.
Exchange ideas, information, or offer technical advice concerning welding matters. Perform experimental welding to evaluate new equipment, techniques, and materials. Serve as project lead engineer to manage specific assigned customer welding development and manufacturing development projects. Help other EM32 W&M Team customers understand and resolve problems related to their welding manufacturing processes.
The selected candidate will serve as an expert for welding and welding manufacturing projects and work integrally with JSEG and customer engineers and engineering technicians. The selected candidate will provide professional, consultation, technical and specialty skill services as needed to resolve unprecedented and/or complex problems pertaining to design, development, analysis, integration, evaluation, testing, and verification of welding and welding manufacturing processes.
Qualifications:- Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a minimum of a Master’s degree with at least 18 years of experience, or BS with at least 20 years of experience.
