The Non-Destructive Evaluation and Damage Tolerance Group serving the Non-Destructive Evaluation and Damage Tolerance Branch (EM21) at Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) in Huntsville, AL has an opening for a Damage Tolerance Intern (DT). The Damage Tolerance Team is responsible for performing analysis of structures and materials as related to lifespan, fracture, fatigue, and damage tolerance. These analyses are critical to failure evaluation and fitness for service criteria for spaceflight and ground based systems re are many different aspects to a full damage tolerance assessment, each one a critical part of the integrity of the target article.
Evaluations are performed by material test evaluation, FEA modeling, stress analysis and NASGRO models, combined into a safe life assessment. In this position, an intern would be: learning the basic fundamentals of fatigue and fracture mechanics; utilizing ASTM standards to evaluate data sets for valuable material information; creating programs to assist with evaluation of large data sets; collecting data on various material properties to further expand the characterization of certain materials;
running analysis on various crack cases to determine critical crack sizes and life expectancies. These tasks will give the intern an opportunity to experience the full range of opportunities found in the damage tolerance branch. Be a part of our team, as we support the exciting challenge to return mankind back to the Moon and beyond.
The Damage Tolerance Intern will:
- Problem solve using the fundamentals of fatigue and fracture mechanics.
- Utilize ASTM standards to evaluate data sets for valuable material information.
- Create programs to assist with evaluation of large data sets; collecting data on various material properties to further expand the characterization of certain materials.
- Execute analysis on various crack cases to determine critical crack sizes and life expectancies.
- Utilize Internship and hands on experiences to facilitate execution of DT related project tasks leveraging knowledge of structural material property, compatibility, processing, and non-destructive evaluation techniques to develop and provide test data to space flight hardware design teams, design reviews, problem resolution teams, and material usage review teams.
- Work according to standard operating and safety procedures.
- Collaborate on a multi-disciplinary team to achieve project success and delivery in a specified timescale.
- Assist in planning the modification of existing laboratory test plans and the design and operation of new plans related to NDE evaluation tasks.
- Utilize computers and computer software daily to generate reports, gather data and communicate test results.
- Interface with Engineering and Science Services Capabilities Augmentation (ESSCA) engineers, ESSCA technicians, and NASA customers as part of their daily duties.
BS degree in Mechanical, Electrical or Aerospace Engineering or related STEM field with a minimum of 0-5 years’ experience is required. Degree from an ABET accredited institution is preferred. Proof of U.S. Citizenship is required. You are expected to have a valid Star / Real r's license, have access to an automobile, and be able to drive yourself to work locations.
DesiredExperience:
- A highly qualified candidate will have experience with the following:
- Minimum GPA requirement 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
- Completion of course in foundations of Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics
- Completion of course in Mechanics of Materials.
- Experience with FEA modeling, MATLAB, Mathematica, Solid Works.
Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss…
