Temporary Full-Time Seasonal Forest/Avian Research Field Assistant

The Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences at Alabama A&M University is seeking a Temporary Full-Time Seasonal Forest/Avian Research Field Assistant. The position will be based in Huntsville, Alabama, with field activities conducted primarily at Chapman Mountain Preserve of the Land Trust of North Alabama. The research focuses on the stopover ecology of fall migratory songbirds using Chapman Mountain Preserve within the City of Huntsville.

Because relatively little is known about the use of this site by migratory birds, the project employs standardized mist-netting methods to collect data on species diversity, abundance, diversity, migration timing, and stopover ecology. The field assistant will assist with organizing and maintaining field equipment, conducting daily mist-netting operation, and working closely with the project leader, team members, and volunteers to safely capture, extract, handle, and process birds while collecting biological and ecological data.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• work safely in remote and variable outdoors field environments
• work early mornings under varying weather conditions
• navigate off-trail using GPS, maps, and a compass
• collect, record, and maintain high quality data
• work effectively both independently and as part of a team
• deploy and maintain mist-nets in a variety of habitats
• safely and efficiently extract birds from mist nets
• identify, age, sex songbirds in hand using standard techniques
• assist with preparation, maintenance, and organization of field equipment
• participate in public outreach and education activities related to the research project

Minimum Position Requirements (including certifications, licenses, etc.):

• High school diploma with three years of related professional experience, or bachelor's degree in biology, forestry, ecology, environmental science, wildlife science, or a closely related field.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Ability to maintain a positive attitude, work diligently, and adapt to field conditions.
• Ability to interact professionally with members of the public while representing Alabama A&M University and the Land Trust of North Alabama.
• Strong interest in avian ecology, wildlife conservation and field-based research
• Previous experience with mist-netting, safely extracting and handling birds, and following research protocols strongly preferred.
