Equipment Technician II (Heavy Equipment)
The City of Huntsville’s Fleet Services Department is seeking qualified applicants to fill this position. This role offers an exciting career opportunity for smart and talented people who want to contribute to the city’s fleet maintenance and operations.
Position OverviewThis is an advanced skilled position focused on the repair and maintenance of automotive and heavy construction equipment. The employee leads and directs mechanics working on heavy equipment repair, receives repair orders, and uses extensive independent judgment to determine the method of repair. Work is reviewed through inspection during the process and upon completion of each job.
Qualifications- High school diploma or GED and training or experience in diesel and heavy equipment mechanics; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) Certification in Heavy/Medium Truck Brakes, Steering, and Drivetrain, or equivalent manufacturer training and certification (e.g., General Motors, Ford). Candidates with equivalent training must obtain the ASE certification within eleven (11) months of hire or promotion.
- Commercial Driver's License, Class A, with Passenger Endorsements required. Candidates must obtain the CDL, Class A, and any required endorsements within eleven (11) months of hire or promotion. They must also pass the written portion of the CDL, Class A Endorsement test within six (6) months and the driving test within eleven (11) months of hire or promotion.
- For certain positions, Fire Apparatus Technician Certification from the Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) Certification Commission, Inc., in at least one area (F1–F6) is required.
