Job Description

Northrop Grumman Space Systems—Missile Defense Integration offers an excellent opportunity for a Software Engineer – SA (26-083) to join our team of skilled and diverse professionals. Based in Huntsville, AL, this role is essential to supporting the U.S. President, the Secretary of Defense, and combatant commanders at the strategic, regional, and operational levels.

Position Overview

The Command and Control, Battle Management, and Communications (C2

BMC) program is a key component of the Missile Defense System. It is a vital operational system that enables the U.S. president, the secretary of defense, and combatant commanders at strategic, regional, and operational levels to systematically plan ballistic missile defense operations, monitor the battle, and dynamically control networked sensors and weapon systems to achieve global and regional mission goals. C2

BMC supports layered missile defense capabilities that enable an optimized response to threats across all ranges and flight phases, and serves as a force multiplier by networking, integrating, and synchronizing autonomous sensor and weapon systems and operations both globally and regionally.

Essential Functions
  • Software development in Java for the Systems Architecture (Sys‑Ar) of the Regional Applications teams in Huntsville, AL.
  • Provide experience across multiple systems and software disciplines, and general knowledge of related disciplines, applications, implications, and customer areas.
  • Analyze and provide technical support for systems software products, including complex problem resolution, design, development, testing, operational integration, and user support.
  • Maintain currency, debug, and configure related software products.
  • Work from specifications to develop or modify operating system applications.
  • Assist with design, coding, benchmark testing, debugging, and documentation of programs.
  • Interface with other system support groups to resolve problems, set standards, and improve overall operating system efficiency.
  • Work on most phases of software systems programming applications, requiring minor instruction and guidance in other phases.
Minimum Education Required

Bachelors

Additional Qualifications/Responsibilities
  • Basic Qualifications:

    A Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a related field from an accredited university, along with 2 years of experience; or a Master’s degree in a related field with 0 years of relevant work experience; or 6 years of relevant work experience may be considered as an alternative to a degree.
  • Applicants must have a current, active DoD 8140 certification at IAT Level II or higher (such as Security+ CE, CCNA‑Security, CySA+, CND, etc.) at the time of application, which is required to start. The candidate is responsible for maintaining their DoD 8140 certification throughout the entire contract period.
  • Applicants must have a current, active in‑scope DoD‑issued Secret security clearance at the time of application, which is required to start.
  • Understanding of software engineering and software development, with Java/J2EE experience or equivalent OO development experience (additional C++ experience also desired).
  • Knowledge of software practices such as coding standards, automated testing, automated build pipelines, and configuration management.
  • Must have oral, written, and communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a fast‑paced team environment.
  • Understanding of standard systems engineering design artifacts such as Use Cases and SysML diagrams.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of Agile development methodologies.
  • Experience developing enterprise applications on Linux (Windows experience also desired).
  • Knowledge of Dev Sec Ops  and/or build management.
  • Willingness to take on unanticipated tasking.
  • Familiarity with common software development and management tools such as Maven, Git/Git Hub, Nexus, and Eclipse.
