Overview:

The Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) is the nonprofit, applied research division of the Georgia Institute of Technology, founded in 1934. GTRI supports eight laboratories in over 20 locations and performs more than $940 million of problem-solving research annually for government and industry.

Project/Unit Description

The Applied Systems Laboratory (ASL) Systems Integration Division (SID) supports systems integration, system design, and product development projects for the Department of Defense (DoD). SID’s work focuses on avionics, electronic warfare, autonomous systems, intelligence systems, tactical communication/datalink systems, and live, virtual, constructive training solutions. The team’s engineering roles include Systems Engineering, Algorithm Engineering, Datalink Engineering, and Embedded Software Engineering.

Job Purpose

The Embedded Real‑Time Software Engineer designs, implements, and tests software for hard real‑time embedded systems, interfaces with real‑time operating systems, device drivers, and board devices, and manages hardware device access and software scheduling. Responsibilities include developing domain‑specific applications, applying safety and security processes, utilizing open‑system software frameworks, and collaborating with a research team to innovate new concepts.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design, test, and develop software packages to meet system requirements.
  • Develop and maintain software and scripts to support embedded software development processes.
  • Influence embedded software development processes.
  • Use embedded systems expertise to define requirements and develop designs that respect hardware limitations.
  • Author technical reports and presentations for projects of moderate‑to‑high complexity.
  • Compile report input from other researchers and prepare final deliverables.
  • Lead or contribute to white papers and proposals, providing technical leadership and ensuring development processes are followed.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Develop software for military embedded systems applications.
  • Develop software requirements and designs.
  • Follow approved coding standards and processes.
  • Provide software development estimates.
  • Ensure compliance with military, safety, and security standards.
  • Create and deliver technical presentations.
  • Act as the technical focal point for sponsors on assigned projects.
  • Lead software teams through requirements, design, implementation, and integration.
Required

Minimum Qualifications
  • Experience developing software for complex military systems using disciplined engineering practices.
  • Experience with C/C++ and/or Ada programming.
  • Experience developing real‑time software.
  • Experience with integrated electronic warfare, sensor systems, or tactical data‑link systems.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Active Secret clearance.
  • Experience developing secure and/or safety‑critical systems.
  • Experience with avionics data buses (e.g., MIL‑STD‑1553, ARINC 429, Ethernet, RS‑422).
  • Experience with tactical data links and military radios.
  • Experience developing avionic systems on military aircraft.
  • Experience with military‑relevant open software standards and frameworks.
  • Experience leading small‑to‑mid‑size technical teams.
Travel Requirements
  • 10%‑25% travel.
Education and Length of Experience

This position is an open‑rank announcement; the final offer will depend on qualifications. Required experience is:

  • 9‑14 years with a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or a related technical field.
  • 7‑12 years with a master’s degree in a related technical field.
  • 4‑9 years with a Ph.D. in a related technical field.
U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Due to research contracts with the U.S. federal government, candidates must be U.S. citizens.

Clearance Type Required

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
