Mid‑Level Software Engineer

Leidos Defense Systems seeks an experienced software engineer to develop technical solutions, collaborate with internal experts, and drive innovative software systems for defense applications.

• Perform hands‑on software system development from lab to field application
• Determine computing system requirements
• Analyze system capabilities to resolve problems related to program intent, output requirements, input data acquisition, programming techniques, and controls
• Prepare operating instructions
• Design and develop autonomous services, desktop applications, scripts, and utility programs as part of customized software products
• Participate in technical design sessions and collaborate with stakeholders to establish foundational architecture for new software applications
• Develop rapid prototypes and proof‑of‑concept applications to validate design decisions and mitigate technical risks early in the development lifecycle

• BS in computer science or related technical degree plus 6‑12+ years of professional software development experience or MS in computer science or related technical degree plus 2‑8+ years of experience
• Proficiency in C# and the .NET ecosystem (equivalent Java experience may be substituted)
• Experience with software application architectural design patterns and decision‑making for scalable, maintainable applications
• Experience with system integration, message handling, and data exchange protocols
• Strong understanding of the software development lifecycle, version control, and agile methodologies
• Good understanding of markup languages (e.g., XML, YAML, HTML)
• Good understanding of Dev Sec Ops  practices and CI/CD pipelines
• Good understanding of API inputs and outputs
• Familiarity with Windows and Linux OS
• Understanding of cybersecurity principles and secure coding practices
• Strong analytical and organizational skills to handle multiple tasks and projects and to work independently
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Must be a U.S. citizen
• Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret clearance
• Must be a resident of Huntsville, AL or willing to relocate to the Huntsville, AL area

• Proficiency in one or more scripting languages:
  Bash, Python, or Power Shell
• Experience with containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), microservices, or cloud‑based architectures
• Effective written and oral communication skills to work with all levels of staff and managers
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office

$87,100.00 – $ (general guideline only; compensation may vary based on responsibilities, education, experience, and other factors).
