Position: SLS Orion Trajectory Analyst, Entry Level (ES2)

Overview

The Mission Analysis and Trajectory Design Engineer supports the development, integration, and testing of flight mechanics simulations for NASA’s SLS/ARTEMIS program, NASA’s HLS program, and other NASA projects. This role requires a well‑rounded background in flight dynamics modelling, programming, and high‑fidelity analyses to optimize and integrate inputs for the flight dynamics of the Artemis mission.

Responsibilities
  • Analyze launch vehicle and spacecraft dynamics, equations of motion, and trajectories to assess performance and support mission analysis.
  • Model ascent and in‑space environments, errors, disturbances, GN&C algorithms, sensors, actuators, and mechanisms.
  • Simulate and analyze nominal, contingency, and failure scenarios during ascent and in‑space flight.
  • Develop algorithms and tools to analyze 3 DOF trajectories using Monte Carlo techniques.
  • Perform studies and insight analysis for NASA’s Human Landing System (HLS) program.
  • Execute or modify existing software/scripts in C, Python, and C++.
Qualifications
  • A degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics or related field from an ABET‑accredited institution is required.
  • Typical experience:
    Master’s degree with at least 3 years of experience, or Bachelor’s degree with 0–5 years of experience.
  • U.S. citizenship is required and candidates must have a STAR .
  • Detail-oriented, able to work independently and collaboratively, with strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Technical skills: MATLAB, Fortran, C++, 3 and 6 DOF dynamic modeling;
    Linux, Bash; experience with computational clusters/servers.
  • Familiarity with GN&C product design, integration, and analysis; ability to configure and run 6‑DOF Monte Carlo simulations; familiarity with convex optimization.
  • Required experience in Trajectory Design and/or mission analysis;
    Python programming;
    Copernicus experience; software and simulation integration or modeling & simulation experience.
Duties
  • Dynamic modeling of 3 and 6 DOF single‑body systems; mission design and trajectory design analysis.
  • Creating, editing, and debugging software written in C, Python, MATLAB, Fortran, and C++.
  • Optimization and improvement of analysis tools and GN&C models.
  • Collaborating with GN&C leads and other engineering disciplines.
  • Supporting verification and validation of technical products; preparing technical reports and briefings.
Essential Functions & Work Environment
  • Office environment with the ability to communicate clearly and professionally (written and verbal).
  • Ability to travel domestically within the USA (approximately 5%).
  • Ability to work at a computer for long periods; sitting at a desk for extended periods (as needed).
  • Access to NASA facilities and interaction with clients; use of stairs or elevators as required.
  • Equipment: operate a personal computer, telephone, and standard office equipment.
  • Normal work hours with potential minimal overtime to meet schedule milestones.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision; good judgment and decision‑making skills.
  • Grooming and dress appropriate for the position and safety considerations.
