Job Summary

Performs routine accounting work. Work involves maintaining, posting, and balancing accounting and financial statements, records, documents, and reports. Works under moderate supervision with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Essential Functions
  • A. Classify, code, post, and balance financial and accounting documents and records in an automated system; monitor and audit completed financial records for accuracy and compliance with state and federal laws and departmental standards, policies and procedures, and rules and regulations; and assist in recommending improvements, adaptations, and revisions to the accounting system and accompanying procedures.
  • B. Audit accounting controls and records of financial transactions; monitor accounting operations in progress; and research reconciliation discrepancies and report findings.
  • C. Analyze, consolidate, and interpret financial data; prepare financial statements, reports, cost data, and budget items; and prepare and maintain financial records and files to include automated information systems.
  • D. Provide technical assistance to agency departmental and administrative staff performing accounting transactions.
  • Perform a variety of marginal duties not listed, to be determined and assigned as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
Education, Experience, and Training
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. Major coursework in Accounting, Business Administration, Finance, or related field preferred. Each year of experience beyond the required three years may be substituted for thirty semester hours on a year‑for‑year basis.
  • One year full‑time, wage‑earning accounting, accounting clerical, auditing, bookkeeping, or statistical analysis experience.
  • Experience in the use of Microsoft Office Suite or equivalent word processing, spreadsheet, database, or presentation software programs preferred.
Knowledge and Skills
  • Knowledge of automated financial information systems.
  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and procedures affecting the maintenance of accounting records and automated accounting systems.
  • Knowledge of applicable state and federal laws, rules, regulations, and statutes (preferred).
  • Knowledge of agency and departmental organizational structure, policies, procedures, rules, and regulations (preferred).
  • Skill to communicate ideas and instructions clearly and concisely.
  • Skill to coordinate with other staff, departments, officials, agencies, organizations, and the public.
  • Skill to interpret and apply rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Skill in problem‑solving techniques.
  • Skill in the use of computers and related equipment in a stand‑alone or local area network environment.
  • Skill in the use of Microsoft Office Suite or equivalent word processing, spreadsheet, database, or presentation software programs.
  • Skill to prepare and maintain complex records and files in an automated system.
  • Skill in the electronic transmission of communications.
  • Skill to analyze, consolidate, and interpret financial data.
  • Skill to audit completed financial records for accuracy and compliance with state and federal laws and established departmental procedures and regulations.
  • Skill to train and monitor inmates.
  • Skill to research and resolve discrepancies and inquiries.

  • A. Ability to walk, stand, sit, kneel, push, stoop, reach above the shoulder, grasp, pull, bend repeatedly, climb stairs and ladders, identify colors, hear with aid, see, write, count, read, speak, analyze, alphabetize, lift and carry under 15 lbs., perceive depth, operate a motor vehicle, and operate motor equipment.
  • B. Conditions include working inside, working around machines with moving parts and moving objects, radiant and electrical energy, working closely with others, working alone, working protracted or irregular hours, and traveling by car, van, bus, and airplane.
  • C. Equipment (machines, tools, devices) used in performing only the essential functions include computer and related equipment, calculator, copier, fax machine, telephone, dolly, and automobile.
