The Department of World Languages and Cultures (WOLC) and the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS) invite applications for a dynamic Lecturer of American Sign Language and/or Deaf Studies. Join us in building SHSU’s rapidly expanding ASL/Deaf Studies program, where you’ll play a vital role in shaping curriculum, mentoring students, and fostering connections between our university and the Deaf community.
The position includes an eight-course annual teaching load delivered in person and in hybrid modality at our Huntsville campus, as well as online courses. You’ll teach beginning and intermediate ASL, with potential opportunities to teach related subjects in Deaf Studies based on your qualifications and expertise. Beyond the classroom, you’ll contribute through committee service, recruitment efforts, curriculum innovation, and meaningful community engagement.
EducationalRequirements For The Position
Must have an M.A. in ASL, Deaf Studies, or a related field with a minimum of 18 graduate credit hours in American Sign Language and/or Deaf Studies. Candidates must demonstrate a high degree of competence in both productive and receptive ASL skills.
Experience Required For The PositionWe’re looking for an educator with a documented history of teaching excellence in ASL and/or Deaf Studies courses, deep knowledge of best practices in ASL pedagogy, experience with online/hybrid teaching modalities (or enthusiasm to develop these skills), native or near-native proficiency in ASL (ASLPI level 4+ preferred), strong bilingual communication skills, proven ability to collaborate effectively within team environments, and commitment to advancing the goals of the ASL and Deaf Studies program.
IdealCandidates Bring
Extensive personal and professional connections within the Deaf community, experience teaching first‑generation and non‑traditional student populations, background in curriculum and/or program development, and active engagement in community outreach and recruitment initiatives.
