Support the delivery of courses in a competency-based education (CBE ) format for new CBE
-based Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences programs at Sam Houston State University. CBE courses arefully online and designed to allow students to progress by demonstrating mastery of clearly defined competencies. Faculty will begin by supporting a CBE section of Composition I (ENGL 1301) and its support course ( INRW 0014) in Fall 2026. Composition II (ENGL 1302) will roll out later in the academic year, and the faculty will assume responsibility for this course as well.
CBE faculty serve as instructors of record and are responsible for evaluating student work, providing timely feedback,and supporting student progression. Each English CBE course will bedesigned in advance;
English CBE instructors will need only toprovide instruction. This position is structured as a 9-month academic-year appointment with an anticipated 3-month summer appointment to support the continuous delivery of the competency-based education program. Faculty are expected to provide instruction across multiple entrypoints throughout the calendar year, including summer, to ensure consistent support for student learning and progression. CBE courses are offered in shorter terms (typically five weeks).
Students who do not fully demonstrate competency in a course withina single term may re-enroll in that course in subsequent termsuntil they reach full competency.
Master’s degree in English or related field preferred; will also consider those that meet SACSCOC credentialing requirement of a master's degree plus 18-graduate credits in English.
Experience Required for the PositionPrevious experience teaching English is required.
Experience teaching higher-ed level courses preferred.
Experience with online learning environments (e.g., Blackboard) preferred.
Experience with competency-based education or outcomes-basedassessment in higher education preferred.
Other Requirements for the PositionUnofficial graduate transcripts are acceptable for the application. Official transcripts are required upon hiring.
