Educational and Experience Requirement:

Bachelor degree in any discipline. No experience required. Library experience is preferred. A combination of education, experience, and training that would produce the required knowledge and abilities could be considered.

Nature & Purpose of Position:

Performs complex tasks in the operation of a specific work unit in the university library. Supports the Health Professions and Medical librarians in providing library resources and services at the Health Professions Building (HPB). Staffs the HPB library services desk, assists users with accessing library resources and interlibrary services, maintains the physical library collections and technologies at HPB, and supervises HPB student worker(s).

Primary Responsibilities:

Provides in-person and virtual general reference. Works with students, faculty, staff and other library users in locating and accessing library resources and services. Interprets library policies and procedures for users. Makes appropriate referrals to the relevant subject librarian, library unit, or university department when questions are outside the scope of knowledge. Maintains the physical library collection. Performs common circulation responsibilities such as shelving, checkouts, returns, holds, fines processing, and management of the Health Professions Building (HPB) reserves items, including any specialized equipment or manipulatives.

Provides general Inter Library Loan (ILL) support for HPB users, such as ILLiad account troubleshooting and handling item pickup and returns. Participates in ILL borrowing processing, including verifying requested citations and processing requests using the OCLC Resource Sharing system, Odyssey, and other appropriate means; locates free lenders; updates and verifies user addresses in ILLiad; refers unresolved borrowing requests to the ILL Library Associate.

Communicates regularly via face-to-face, email, and Microsoft Teams channels to stay updated and keep Access Services colleagues and supervisors apprised of activities and issues relevant to library services ists librarians in creating and updating online library guides. Assists health professions and medical librarians with administrative or clerical work, as needed, such as processing incoming and outgoing mail, managing reservations of library conference room, and creating spreadsheets, handouts, and signage.

Develops and maintains current working knowledge of general reference and health sciences resources relevant to HPB users. Provides basic routine maintenance on IT technologies in the library services area, such as changing toner cartridges, refilling paper, and troubleshooting basic computer or printer errors. Reports problems to the library’s Computer Maintenance Supervisor or the university IT department. Hires, trains, and supervises HPB library student assistant(s), including scheduling, prioritizing, delegating, and monitoring work.

Provides regular feedback and approves timesheets. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Other Specifications:

Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite with the ability to learn quickly and have an approachable demeanor with a service-oriented attitude. Mostly standard work hours (8am-5pm, M-F). May occasionally be asked to assist with staffing the library space at The Woodlands Center or work some evening or weekend hours for special events or programming. Must be able to lift and carry boxes;

load and push book trucks; and shelve books.
