The Department of Human Sciences at Sam Houston State University (SHSU ) invites applications from qualified candidates for a 9-month appointment as an Assistant Professor of Practice in Interior Design beginning Spring 2027. The Department of Human Sciences is one of six academic units inthe College of Health Sciences, and the Interior Design program isone of three and the largest undergraduate programs in the department with 120 students.

The department offers a B.S., B.A.,and a minor in Interior Design, and holds accreditation from the Council for Interior Design Accreditation ( CIDA ) and the National Association of Schools of Art and Design ( NASAD ). The primary responsibilities of this position include teaching undergraduate courses in the Interior Design BA/BS program. Course swill include teaching AutoCAD, Revit, Enscape, and Sketch Up software, foundation courses in applied design theory, and other studio and lecture courses as needed for the program.

The appointment will include a 4/4 teaching load during the fall andspring semesters.

There are multiple options for places tolive near our campuses. The city of Huntsville is nestled in theEast Texas Piney Woods and is centrally located on a direct route between Houston and Dallas. With a population of roughly 40,000(excluding SHSU ), Huntsville offers the simplicity of small-townlife and easy access to surrounding larger cities including Conroe,The Woodlands, and Bryan/College Station. Full of Texas history andcharm, this county seat is home to multiple museums, annual festivities, antique stores, year-round outdoor activities,vineyards, golf courses, lakes, and a beautiful state park.

In alittle over an hour after leaving the main campus, you can arrivein downtown Houston. It provides access to large entertainment venues and art museums. If you prefer life on the water, Lake Conroe and Lake Livingston are a short commute, and Galveston Island and the Gulf Coast are a two-hour drive.

The ideal candidate would possess a minimum of a Master’s degree in interior design or a related field. Substantial and notable professional interior design practice experience, professional credentials, and state/national licensure as a design professional may be considered in lieu of a Master’s degree.

Required: A minimum of five years of full-time experience in professional practice work or a combination of professional practice and university-level teaching experience is required.…
