Job Title: Licensed Specialist in School Psychology (LSSP)

Retirees of the Texas Teachers Retirement System (TRS) may apply. Primary

Purpose:

The Licensed Specialist in School Psychology (LSSP) provides psycho educational, behavioral, and school-based psychological services to justice-involved students in a correctional education setting. This position ensures IDEA-compliant evaluations, supports ARD committees, and assists campuses with trauma-informed, behaviorally sound educational practices to improve instructional access and student outcomes.

This role is educational in nature and does not provide clinical therapy.

Qualifications

Education/Certification/

Experience:

• Master’s degree or higher in School Psychology
• Current Texas LSSP license (TSBEP)
• Experience with special education assessment required
• Ability to function within secure facility protocols

Special Knowledge/

Skills:

Students in custody frequently present with complex trauma histories, emotional-behavioral challenges, and emotional disability-related needs. An LSSP ensures:

• Timely and compliant evaluations
• Legally defensible decision-making for ED and AU eligibilities
• Continuous behavioral support and consultation
• Reduced reliance on costly, fragmented contract services

Major

Responsibilities and Duties:

Psycho-educational Evaluation & IDEA Compliance

• Conduct initial evaluations and re-evaluations for special education eligibility, including Emotional Disabilities (ED) and Autism (AU)
• Administer, score, and interpret cognitive, academic, social-emotional, and behavioral assessments
• Conduct classroom observations and behavioral assessments
• Ensure compliance with IDEA timelines and TEA requirements
• Present evaluation results and recommendations to ARD committees

Program Support

• Develop and support implementation of behavior management strategies
• Monitor behavioral progress and provide data-based recommendations
• Assist teams in identifying positive behavior supports and de-escalation strategies appropriate for secure settings
• Support continuity of services for students entering custody with existing IEPs

ARD & Team Collaboration

• Actively participate in ARD meetings as a related service provider
• Support disability impact statements related to behavior and social-emotional functioning
• Collaborate with special education, general education, administrative staff, and other related services providers
• Support compliance with the TEA IEP Quality & Rigor Rubric

Staff Training & Capacity Building

• Provide professional development on:
  • Trauma-informed educational practices
  • Positive behavior supports
  • Social, emotional, and behavioral considerations in correctional settings
  • Various topics in special education and supporting students with disabilities
• Consult regularly with campus staff regarding challenging behaviors
