Tall Tine Bowstrings, Castlewood, SD | Part-Time

Position Overview

The Bowstring Builder is responsible for the precise construction, inspection, and finishing of custom and production bowstrings and cables for compound and traditional archery equipment. This role requires attention to detail, consistency, material knowledge, and pride in craftsmanship. The builder ensures all products meet performance, safety, and quality standards for both retail and wholesale customers.

This role exists to:

Produce consistent, high-quality bowstrings that meet performance and durability expectations

Support local retail demand and wholesale production volume

Maintain repeatable build processes for scalability

Reduce error, waste, and turnaround time

Protect brand reputation through craftsmanship and reliability

Key Responsibilities
1. Bowstring & Cable Construction

Build custom and standard bowstrings and cables using approved materials and specifications

Measure, cut, and serve string material accurately

Twist, stretch, and pre-load strings to ensure proper length and stability

Install center serving, end servings, and specialty servings as required

Match color patterns and layouts per customer or production order

2. Quality Control & Inspection

Verify string length, strand count, and serving placement

Inspect for frays, inconsistencies, or defects before approval

Perform stretch testing and final adjustments

Reject or rework strings that do not meet quality standards

Maintain consistency across batches for wholesale orders

3. Equipment & Tool Operation

Operate string jigs, serving tools, stretchers, and measuring devices

Maintain proper tension settings and jig calibration

Keep tools clean, organized, and in working order

Report or correct equipment issues promptly

4. Material Management

Track string materials, serving thread, and consumable inventory

Minimize waste through efficient material use

Follow material standards for each product line

Assist with reordering materials when levels are low

5. Documentation & Process Compliance

Follow standardized build sheets or work orders

Note deviations or custom requests accurately

Support continuous improvement by identifying process inefficiencies

Communicate with shop staff or management on order priorities

Support bow technicians with installation or troubleshooting when needed

Assist with training new builders as the business grows

Represent the brand positively through workmanship and professionalism

Day-to-Day Activities

A typical day may include:

Reviewing daily build orders (retail & wholesale)

Setting up jigs for specific bow models or batch runs

Building multiple sets of strings and cables

Stretching, serving, and finishing strings

Performing quality checks and labeling completed products

Cleaning and organizing the build area

Logging completed work and material usage

Required Qualifications Technical Skills

Basic understanding of compound and/or traditional archery equipment

Ability to measure accurately and follow detailed specifications

Manual dexterity and steady hand skills

Familiarity with string materials (BCY, Angel, etc.) preferred

Ability to operate string-building tools (or willingness to learn)

Experience

Previous bowstring building experience preferred but not required

Archery shop, bow technician, or manufacturing experience is a plus

Training may be provided for candidates with strong mechanical aptitude

Strong attention to detail

Patience and consistency

Pride in craftsmanship

Ability to work independently and stay focused

Reliability and punctuality

Physical Requirements

Ability to stand or sit at a bench for extended periods

Repetitive hand and wrist movements

Ability to lift small boxes or spools (typically under 30 lbs)

Visual acuity for fine detail work

Moderate noise from tools and shop activity

Performance Metrics (How Success Is Measured)

Consistency of finished string length and quality

Low remake or defect rate

Production output vs. time expectations

Adherence to build standards and processes

Positive feedback from customers and technicians
