Senior Accountant
The Senior Accountant reports to the Controller and is responsible for overseeing day-to-day accounting operations and financial reporting for construction projects and related entities. This role ensures accurate job cost accounting, contract revenue recognition, monthly close processes, and compliance with GAAP and company policies. The Senior Accountant partners closely with project managers, operations teams, and leadership to support financial performance, project profitability, and informed business decisions.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and review monthly financial statements and supporting schedules
- Manage month-end and year-end close processes
- Maintain general ledger accounts and ensure accuracy of journal entries
- Perform construction job cost accounting and analyze project profitability
- Monitor work-in-progress (WIP) schedules and percentage-of-completion accounting
- Assist with revenue recognition in accordance with applicable accounting standards
- Reconcile balance sheet accounts, bank accounts, and intercompany accounts
- Review subcontractor pay applications, retainage, and project billings
- Track and analyze labor costs, equipment costs, materials, and overhead allocations
- Support accounts payable, accounts receivable, and cash management functions
- Prepare and file sales and use tax reports and other regulatory filings
- Assist with annual audits and tax preparation
- Develop and improve accounting procedures and internal controls
- Provide financial analysis and reporting to management and project teams
- Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis
- Partner closely with project managers and operational teams to review project financial performance and cost controls
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance required
- 5+ years of accounting experience, preferably within the construction industry
- Strong understanding of construction accounting concepts including:
- Job costing
- WIP schedules
- Percentage-of-completion accounting
- Retainage accounting
- Construction contract billing
- Knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting requirements
- Experience with ERP/accounting systems such as Sage, Viewpoint, Foundation, CMiC, or similar
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
Preferred Skills
- Experience with multi-entity accounting
- Familiarity with lien waivers, subcontract agreements, and project compliance requirements
- Ability to communicate effectively with operations and project management teams
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy
