General Summary of DutiesBusy four OR pediatric surgery center. Surgical technologists (scrubs or operating room technicians) assist in surgical operations under the supervision of surgeons, registered nurses, or other surgical personnel. They are members of operating room teams, which most commonly include surgeons, anesthesiologists, and circulating nurses.
Education / Experience / Requirements- Graduate of an accredited surgical technologist program
- CST certification, or granted exemption based on state regulations
- Preferred 1–2 years clinical experience in an operating room setting; may accept 0–2 years of clinical experience in a related field
- Certified in Basic Life Support
- Prepares and maintains medical equipment and instrumentation for surgical procedures
- Helps prepare the operating room by setting up the sterile field, including instruments, equipment, drapes, and solutions
- Follows state and federal facility regulations when attending to patients
- Completes a safety check before the start of the procedure on appropriate equipment and supplies
- Assembles both sterile and non‑sterile equipment, ensuring it is functioning properly
- Passe instruments and other sterile supplies to surgeons and surgeon assistants
- Participates in the count of sponges, needles, supplies, and instruments based on the procedure type
- Helps prepare specimens and assists with specimen disposition
- Applies dressings
- Cleans and restocks the procedure room
- Pulls supplies and instruments for upcoming procedures
- Assists with inventory management
- Assists with decontamination, cleaning, sterilization, and quality testing related to sterilization and high‑level disinfection
- Performs other duties as assigned
- Must be on feet for long periods and lift or turn disabled patients
- Requires sitting and standing in a normal office environment
- Ability to concentrate for periods up to four hours
- Ability to communicate verbally in person and on the telephone
- Proficiency with computer keyboard and monitor usage
Skills and Abilities
- Demonstrate knowledge and skills to provide care appropriate to pediatric patients
- Utilize recognized channels of communication
- Maintain good interpersonal relationships with patients, co‑workers, and other health team members
Surgical technologists work in clean, well‑lit, well‑ventilated environments. They must stand for long periods and remain alert during operations. Exposure to communicable diseases and unpleasant sights, odors, and materials may occur.
