JOB DESCRIPTIONThe primary function of this job is to transport offenders of all security classifications to various locations within, and outside, of the City of Hutchinson. The employee oversees and participates in the custody, security, and treatment of offenders while transporting them to various locations. This employee works independently and without supervision, and must exercise discretion and use independent judgment, often facing critical, potentially violent, and complex situations.
The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $20.00 per hour depending on skills and experience.
- Use police equipment, including vehicles, communications units, handcuffs, batons, tasers, OC Spray, and related equipment;
- Shooting service weapon with proficiency in accordance with State Standards;
- Defensive tactics and officer safety skills;
- Standard administration of first aid; and
- Use of electronic equipment including laptop, job-related software, video equipment, radio, camera, etc.
During emergency operations and performing life‑saving and rescue procedures, work requires the mobility, flexibility, stamina, strength, and physical reflexes to subdue resisting individuals, chase fleeing offenders, run, walk, crouch or crawl and climb stairs/ladders. Must also have the ability to stand, sit for extended periods of time without breaks.
RESPONSIBILITIES- Transport offenders via passenger vehicles to various destinations such as courts, jails, prisons, medical centers, and other specified locations;
- Escort offenders into surroundings requiring contact with judges, prosecuting attorneys, and other court personnel; hospital personnel such as physicians, nurses, and other medical staff; and the public. This position will make contact with federal, state, and police agencies and sheriff's offices within, and outside, of the City of Hutchinson and maintains professional courtesy;
- Plan and execute all aspects of the trip/run including: inspection/exchanging information, search of the vehicle and security items, determination of amount and types of restraints, selection of necessary weapons, planning special security precautions, emergency and escape procedures, timing and routing of the trip, accommodation of needs of offenders, possession of all clearances and necessary travel documents, inspection and storage of offender’s personal property;
- Assume responsibility for significant departmental material resources such as passenger vehicle, weaponry, and communications equipment;
- Observe offenders’ activities to detect unusual or prohibited behavior that might be a threat to the security and safety of fellow employees, other offenders, and the public. Ensure offenders’ compliance with departmental rules and regulations;
- Control, restrain, and subdue disruptive offenders to prevent rioting and possible escapes. Protect the public from harm or danger. Minimize contact between the public and offender to lessen the danger. Appropriate response may include use of firearms, and/or deadly force;
- Follow departmental security policies and procedures. Maintain vigilant adherence to all departmental procedures;
- Communicate with correctional facilities, jails, and other law enforcement agencies where offenders are being housed, giving instructions for their departure and approximate time of arrival;
- During necessary stops, inspect restrooms or other areas where an offender may be waiting or housed, for possible escape routes;
- Maintain proper court security coverage and prevent escapes;
- Place restraining devices on offenders for security purposes while transporting and assure a secure environment when devices are removed;
- Verify offenders’ identification with picture and other methods to be certain an offender is assigned the proper detail;
- Determine proper, shortest, and safest travel route;
- Prepare written records and reports related to the work;
- May take in searches for escaped offenders;
- Perform related work as assigned.
- EDUCATION: A high school diploma or GED is required;
- Must be able to pass both a drug screen and intensive criminal background check;
- Must be at least 18 years old and have a valid driver's license.
