Park Maintenance Technician - Playgrounds
POSITION CONTROL NUMBER: PR1026A, PR1043A FLSA STATUS: N
Position DescriptionUnder general supervision, this position performs inspections, maintenance, and repair tasks on playground structures throughout the park system to ensure public safety and equipment standards are met. Day-to-day and seasonal tasks may differ. Performs other duties as assigned. This position is supervised by and reports directly to the Park Supervisor.
Work Performed50% Craft Skills. Evaluate and prioritize non-compliant equipment and provides recommendation for location and type of replacement equipment. Works with management on new installation and replacement installation design. Maintains inspection, installation, and repair logs for equipment and surfacing of playgrounds. Removes and installs replacement parts of playground equipment. Orders replacement parts in accordance with county purchasing policy. Enters detailed inspections sheets, work orders and maintenance logs into Cartegraph inventory tracking system.
40% Maintenance. Conducts weekly inspections of equipment and surfacing. Performs cleaning, graffiti removal, and vandalism repairs as needed. Repairs to surfacing as needed per manufacturer specifications.
Note:
Emergency repairs may be required at anytime and or any day of the week.
10% Communication. Instructs one Park Maintenance Worker and or seasonal staff if assistance is required on proper completion of tasks. Inspects and reviews work to ensure projects are complete. Inventory of playground repair items to insure the materials are ordered and restocked at all times with approval from Park Maintenance Supervisor. Creates, maintains, and updates playground equipment inventory. Explains and demonstrates the proper use of equipment used on the job.
Checks work procedures and products. Comply with all safety procedures for proper installation, utility locates, and excavation requirements.
Knowledge of:
- General construction methods and procedures, and procedures for repair and maintenance of playground systems.
- The materials, methods and practices used in diagnosis, preventative maintenance and maintenance operations.
- Safety hazards and precautions.
Ability to:
- Bend and twist to repair playground equipment.
- Read, interpret and apply information in technical repair manuals.
- Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
- Use and properly maintain the tools and equipment of the trade.
- Read and interpret blueprints and specifications.
- Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, using the English language.
Skill in:
- The use of maintenance equipment such as backhoe, and trenchers for maintenance.

Minimum Qualifications- High School Diploma or GED Certificate.
- Preferred three (3) years’ experience with playground installation, repairs and design.
- Ability to obtain the Certified Playground Safety Inspector certificate within 6 months of employment or soonest testing date available to 6 months.
- Valid Driver’s License and able to operate County-owned vehicle (HR-2013-2).
- HR-2013-2:
Driving record that shows:
No misdemeanor or felony convictions for traffic/vehicular offenses (DUI, vehicular homicide, reckless driving, hit and run, etc.) on the driving record that are less than five (5) years old;
No more than two (2) at fault or chargeable accidents on their driving record that are less than five (5) years old;
No more than two (2) traffic infractions (speeding, failure to yield right of way, etc.) that are less than one (1) year old.
- Required to pass a background check, pre-employment physical, drug screen, and a review of driving record.
- Required to lift fifty (50) pounds.
