Job Description

Position Overview

The Diocesan School Adjustment Counselor works collaboratively with the Office of Safe Environment, Catholic Schools Office and elementary Catholic school communities within the Diocese of Fall River to provide counseling, crisis response, consultation, and social‑emotional support services for students. The counselor helps foster a safe, healthy, and productive school environment by addressing students’ emotional, behavioral, and interpersonal needs and by partnering with families, teachers, and administrators to support student well‑being and school success.

The position reports directly to the Director for the Office of Safe Environment with a dotted‑line report to the Superintendent of Catholic Schools.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide short‑term individual and small‑group counseling to students experiencing social, emotional, behavioral, or school‑related challenges.
  • Assess student needs and help develop intervention strategies that support emotional well‑being, positive behavior, and academic success.
  • Facilitate crisis intervention, prevention, and response services for students and school communities as needed.
  • Support students in identifying feelings, strengthening coping skills, improving decision‑making, and resolving interpersonal conflicts.
  • Provide feedback to parents, teachers, and administrators, as appropriate, regarding student social‑emotional and behavioral concerns.
  • Collaborate with school staff and administrators to promote a healthy school climate and support programs that strengthen students’ social‑emotional development.
  • Refer students and families to appropriate support services and mental health professionals as needed and assist with follow‑up coordination.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications
  • Understanding of and commitment to the teachings and mission of the Catholic Church.
  • Master’s degree in school counseling or a closely related field.
  • Two or more years of experience as a school counselor or in a comparable student support role.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
  • Working knowledge of counseling theories, intervention strategies, and student support resources.
  • Ability to assess student needs and respond effectively to social, emotional, and behavioral concerns.
  • High level of integrity, sound judgment, and discretion in handling sensitive student matters.
  • Proficient technological skills to access, maintain, and update student records.
Working Conditions
  • This position requires daily travel within the Diocese.
  • Weekend and evening work may be required.
  • This is a 10‑month position based on the established diocesan school calendar each year.
