Job Description

Purpose of Position:
To work with the Inpatient Cardiovascular Medicine Service within the TCS MACC Department. This Nurse Practitioner (NP) will assist the attending cardiologists in all areas of patient care in the Cardiovascular Medicine Service.

Responsibilities
  • Cardiology Service responsibilities:
    • Provide Cardiology services as required for patients as assigned, all without regard to source of payment, consistent with all applicable legal requirements.
    • Assist in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of Cardiology and related services.
    • Obtain and coordinate patient history, physical, laboratory results, charting of clinical findings, admissions orders, nursing instructions, and other required elements.
    • Work closely and cooperatively with the Hospital, the Cardiologists, and other staff across all of the Cape Cod Healthcare system.
    • Return calls to patients and additional personnel on a timely basis; place timely calls for ancillary test results, to order follow-up tests, or to initiate treatment orders.
    • Be immediately available to nurses and other staff for questions and problems relating to patients during the course of their Hospital treatment, including on admission and discharge related matters.
    • Assist in family liaison.
  • Medical Treatment Care:
    • Responsible for many aspects of care under the supervision of the attending physician, including fluid and electrolyte management, nutrition, pain management, transfusion therapy, anticoagulation management, education and post‑discharge planning.
    • Manage and monitor arrhythmias, pacing, drug therapy, O₂ therapy, and other non‑cardiac medications under supervision of the attending physician after procedures.
    • Assist in the evaluation and management of clinical events such as fever, altered hemodynamics, CHF, pulmonary complications, abrupt vessel closure, arrhythmias, access site complications, and others.
    • Assist in transfers to and from the intensive care units.
  • Discharge Planning:
    • Perform patient education regarding discharge including preventive care and risk factor reduction.
    • Write discharge orders, prescriptions, and dictate discharge summaries in collaboration with the attending physician.
    • Act as a liaison between the attending Cardiologist and family members, and schedule follow‑up care as necessary, including VNA if needed.
  • Research and

    Education:
    • Participate in aspects of research involving planning, performance, analysis of data, and publication.
    • Complete 100 hours of continuing medical education each 2‑year period to maintain PE certification status; pass a National PE re‑certification exam every six years; maintain ACLS certification annually.
    • Attend internal and external education meetings and read professional journals to maintain and enhance skills and clinical competence.
    • Encourage advancement of medical and tactical skills to deliver optimum patient care.
  • Oversight Responsibilities:
    • Supervise medical students and physician assistants doing clinical rotations in the Cardiology Department as directed by the attending physician.
    • Teach students, staff, nurses, technicians, and cardiology fellows as instructed by the attending physician, especially regarding evaluation, treatment, and longitudinal care of cardiovascular patients.
  • Maintain a professional attitude toward patients and family members at all times and develop sound working relationships with other staff involved in patient care.
  • Consistently provide service excellence to all patients, family members, visitors, volunteers, and co‑workers.
  • Challenge current working practices, identify process improvement opportunities, and present recommendations and solutions to management; actively participate in the organization’s culture of continuous improvement.
  • Qualifications Education/Experience/Training (NP)
    • (MSN) – Master of Science in Nursing
    • (CNP) – Currently licensed as a Certified Nurse Practitioner in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
    • (DEA) – US Department of Justice DEA Registration (required if prescribing)
    • (BLS) – Basic Life Support certification (obtain within 30 days of position start, offered within)
