Job Description
Purpose of Position:
To perform the duties and responsibilities of a Cytotechnologist, including specific administrative functions as defined.
- Ensures the satisfaction of all users of the department's services, both internal and external, and continuously seeks to improve customer service and satisfaction.
- Screens an average minimum of 60 slides per day from both gynecological and non-gynecological sources and signs out results of the highest possible quality.
- Documents the slide interpretation results of each case examined or reviewed; records the total number of slides examined or reviewed in all laboratories each 24‑hour period; records the number of hours spent examining slides in each 24‑hour period.
- Prepares monthly work statistics.
- Serves as a technical reference for physicians and other health care professionals.
- Performs all facets of cyto‑preparation and post‑cyto preparation.
- Assists in the preparation of material obtained from fine‑needle aspirations.
- Performs and documents troubleshooting and preventive maintenance on equipment.
- Reviews and revises section manuals as assigned, in compliance with CAP and NCCLS standards, at least annually.
- Assists the Anatomic Pathology Supervisor and pathologists in maintaining the Quality Assurance/Quality Control Program; designs and implements QA projects, collects data, summarizes results, and makes recommendations.
- Assists in retrospective quality assurance reviews.
- Participates in the preparation of cytology‑histology problem case sets.
- Practices efficient and economical use of laboratory supplies; monitors inventory, orders supplies, and restocks upon receipt.
- Maintains the confidentiality of information deemed confidential.
- Maintains harmonious and cooperative relations with fellow employees, medical staff, patients, and guests; serves effectively as part of the Laboratory team in providing professional service to patients.
- Maintains work benches, testing areas, and other work areas in a clean, sanitary, and clutter‑free condition for the safety of patients, guests, and staff.
- Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to stay abreast of the latest trends in the field; documents at least 6.0 CEUS as approved by the ASCP and/or ASCT.
- Teaches practical and theoretical principles of test procedures, presents in‑services, and assists in the preparation of in‑service and continuing education programs.
- Maintains thorough knowledge of departmental and hospital policies and procedures as they pertain to the job.
- Performs other work‑related duties and activities as assigned or requested.
- Read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree (copy of degree or transcript required) plus or including one (1) full year in an accredited School of Cytotechnology.
- CT (ASCP) registered.
- Employees with five years’ experience will be expected to perform QA/QC when requested.
Cape Cod Hospital, Hyannis, Massachusetts – Department: CCH‑Pathology. Hourly pay range: $32.31 – $53.13.
