Position Overview

The Paving Superintendent oversees the daily operations of highway/asphalt crews. This position primarily performs supervisory duties, and on rare occasions may assist with general laborer and equipment operation tasks as needed.

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)
  • Coordinates daily work activities, job site organization, reading of plans, etc.
  • Supervises and schedules on‑site work crews, suppliers, and subcontractors.
  • Organizes job site goals, timelines, and budgets.
  • Trains crews on methods and equipment as needed.
  • Coordinates trucks, material delivery, and traffic control.
  • Keeps crews accountable for safety, production rates, and quality control.
  • Complies with and supports safety initiatives to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Maintains good client/customer relations.
  • Drives to various job site locations.
  • Assists with general laborer duties as needed, which may include shoveling, laying asphalt, and other tasks.
  • Assists with heavy equipment operation if trained, as needed at job site locations.
  • Maintains time and materials records necessary to complete daily job costing.
  • May be subject to drug testing, medical exams, and physical agility testing.
  • Works fluctuating schedules in or out of town.
  • Is in time and fit for duty.

Education/Experience
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred and 4 to 7 years of asphalt‑related construction experience or an equivalent combination of education and training.
Work Requirements
  • Thorough knowledge of the construction industry and its methods.
  • Previous experience with asphalt paving and grading.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise and manage workers.
  • Ability to understand blueprints, contract specifications, and grades.
  • Can work independently as well as with other crew managers, customers, subcontractors, and the public.
  • Knowledge of DOT, OSHA, EPA, and CDL laws and procedures.
  • Demonstrated excellent safety awareness and willingness to comply with policies and safety procedures.
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to write correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one‑on‑one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Compute rate, ratio, percent, land to draw, and interpret bar graphs.
  • Apply common sense to carry out detailed written or oral instructions.
  • Work well with others in a group or one‑on‑one setting.
  • Can type and use keyboards accurately and has knowledge of database software.
