Position Overview

At Kiewit, the guiding principle "Nobody Gets Hurt" drives our safety culture. We are looking for a Safety Specialist to create, support and audit safety programs to reinforce our commitment to safety.

As a Safety Specialist, you will report to the Project Safety Manager and focus on the successful implementation of the Site Specific Safety Plan in the field. Your responsibilities include applying contract and client safety expectations, Kiewit Corporate Safety Manual, Corporate Procedures Manual, District Standards and all relevant laws. You will verify work execution, problem‑solve with operations and craft, assist with corrective measures, and provide resources to maintain safe solutions.

Location

This position is located at an active construction site in Scoville,  Blackfoot,  site attendance is required; this role is not hybrid or remote.

Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with craft daily to encourage buy‑in of safety programs and support craft ownership.
  • Exercise Stop Work responsibility to ensure adherence to company policies, regulations, work plans, work packs and detailed work plans.
  • Plan, prioritize and problem‑solve with operations in the field daily based on leading indicator trends and upcoming work.
  • Encourage, support, inspire and advise staff and craft employees.
  • Maintain project files in compliance with OSHA/MSHA regulations and company policies, including accident/injury files.
  • Assist with first aid and maintain relationships with emergency medical services and clinics.
  • Assist with incident investigations and implementing effective solutions.
  • Complete daily documented hazard inspections and assist operations, craft and subcontractors with corrective actions.
  • Review work plans, work packs and detailed work plans prior to the start of work.
  • Provide safety training on policies, procedures, OSHA/MSHA, NCCER, SIMS, orientation and client‑specific requirements.
Qualifications
  • Degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Safety or a related field is preferred.
  • Knowledge of construction safety, current federal and OSHA requirements within the commercial nuclear and DOE setting is desired.
  • Working knowledge of computers and experience with Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • 1‑3+ years of safety experience required.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and time‑management skills.
  • Good attention to detail and ability to recognize discrepancies.
  • Strong work ethic and willingness to get the job done.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Ability to freely access all points of a construction site in wide‑ranging climates and environments.

  • Communicate and interact effectively and professionally with supervisors, employees and others individually or in a team environment.
  • Perform work safely and effectively. Understand and follow oral and written instructions, including warning signs, equipment use and other policies.
  • Work during normal operating hours to organize and complete work within given deadlines. Work overtime and weekends as required.
  • May work at various different locations and conditions may vary.
