I. TITLE

Media Center Specialist – Elementary (Employees hired after March 27 will be paid hourly for the remainder of the 25-26 school year. Benefits will begin in the 26-27 school year)

II. QUALIFICATIONS
  • a minimum of two years of college or 48 college credits or a score of 457 or greater on the Para Pro Praxis
  • working knowledge of an elementary school media center
  • ability to work with staff, students, and the public
  • patient, yet firm
  • demonstrated aptitude for the work to be performed
  • physically able to perform assigned duties
  • previous experience preferred, but not mandatory
  • such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable

IV. JOB GOALS

To support the delivery of School District 91's written, taught, tested and reported curriculum and contribute to maximizing student achievement. To provide all students with an enriched library environment containing a wide variety of materials that will invite intellectual growth, and to aid all students in acquiring the skills needed to take full advantage of media center's resources.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Operate and supervise the media center
  • Evaluate, select, and requisition new media center materials
  • Manage the media center budget
  • Assist teachers in the selection of books and other instructional materials, and make media center materials available to supplement the instructional program
  • Inform teachers and other staff members concerning new materials in the media center
  • Maintain a comprehensive and efficient system for cataloging all media center materials and instruct teachers and students on use of the system
  • Promote appropriate conduct of students using media center facilities
  • Counsel with and give reading guidance to students with special reading problems or unusual intellectual interests
  • Keep bulletin boards and other displays current and attractive
  • Prepare and deliver lesson plans for all classes on a weekly basis, including story time and library skills training
  • Perform an annual inventory of media center materials
  • Train volunteers in assigned tasks
  • Perform minor book repairs
  • Maintain the media center in a neat and attractive condition
  • Strive to maintain and improve job skills through in-service training programs and other means
  • Maintain high standards of ethical behavior and confidentiality
  • Have regular and predictable attendance

VII. TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

This is a limited full-time position scheduled for 25 hours per week during the school year. Wages will be in accordance with the Classified Salary Schedule as a Grade 6 – $17.63 or $18.53 (with a bachelor's degree or 5 years relevant experience). This is an "at will" position in that the employer or employee may terminate employment at any time or for any reason consistent with applicable state or federal law.

The "employment at will" policy cannot be changed verbally or in writing unless the change is specifically authorized in writing and expressly approved by the Board of Trustees of District 91.

VIII. EVALUATION

Performance of this position will be evaluated annually by the Building Administrator in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on the evaluation of classified personnel. This position has been given an overall physical classification of light duty.
