Regular Faculty

The Department of Nuclear Engineering & Industrial Management at the University of Idaho – Idaho Falls Center for Higher Education invites applicants for a high profile, tenured faculty position at the Associate or Full Professor rank in all areas of nuclear science, engineering, and closely related fields including, but not limited to contemporary and advanced nuclear fuel cycle analysis, including artificial intelligence and machine learning, neutronics and core design, cybersecurity, nuclear integrated energy systems, operations, fuel recycling, spent fuel disposition, transport, and storage.

Rank and tenure are negotiable based on how the candidate meets the criteria outlined in the college and department bylaws. The University of Idaho seeks bold, deeply collaborative colleagues with a leading, national reputation. The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. degree in Nuclear Engineering, Radiological Engineering, Nuclear Physics, or Plasma Engineering. The applicant must also demonstrate a strong, sustained track record of extramurally funded research across an array of federal and state agencies.

Candidates in existing partnerships with national laboratories are highly desirable. The applicant will be expected to engage and foster strong collaborations with faculty across the NEIM, Department, the main University of Idaho campus in Moscow, and Idaho Falls Center for Higher Education as well as collaborate with Idaho National Laboratory, other academic institutions in Idaho, and external consortia. The successful candidate will be committed to an active role within the Department by teaching courses in areas of their expertise, assisting with recruiting efforts both nationally and within the mountain west, and engaging in high impact external and internal service activities.

They must be committed to excellence in teaching and mentoring students. There is a high possibility that this position will be jointly appointed with Idaho National Laboratory to facilitate direct interaction with leading researchers in a wide range of fields.

The Department of Nuclear Engineering & Industrial Management (NEIM) under the University of Idaho College of Engineering was created in the mid-2020, bringing together three graduate degree programs –– Nuclear Engineering (M.S., M.Engr., and Ph.D.), Engineering Management (M.Engr.) and Technology Management (MS), and an undergraduate degree program in Industrial Technology. Several undergraduate and graduate certificate programs are also offered. The NEIM Department is located at the Idaho Falls Center for Higher Education near Idaho National Laboratory (INL).

The Idaho Falls Center for Higher Education offers outstanding research and educational opportunities to students in southeastern Idaho and is currently addressing state and national energy needs in partnership with INL. Collaboration with INL allows students to access laboratory resources, internships, and postdoctoral research opportunities. The University of Idaho at Idaho Falls began offering classes in 1954, supporting the mission of the United States Department of Energy.

The program evolved to meet the educational needs INL and has since awarded more than 1200 advanced degrees. Collaboration with INL and the other Idaho universities/colleges allows the Idaho Falls Center for Higher Education to deliver excellence in scholarship and critical thinking to enhance today and prepare for tomorrow.
