About the role

The Aalo-X Shift Manager is the senior on-shift operating authority for Aalo-X. The Shift Manager directs the control room and field operating crew during startup, testing, power operation, shutdown, abnormal events, and emergencies. This role protects the reactor, personnel, and public by maintaining the plant within its authorization basis and approved operating limits and by applying conservative decision‑making whenever conditions are uncertain.

Expectations are lead by example, set the standard, grow your team, and most importantly, value your team.

What you’ll do
  • Exercise command and control of all on‑shift Aalo‑X operations and coordinate work affecting plant status, reactivity, equipment availability, or nuclear safety.
  • Set and maintain the clear understanding and performance of a highly capable and professional Nuclear Safety Culture on your shift.
  • Coordinate and release maintenance work packages, authorize LOTO’s, direct RO/SRO’s in oversight and support of maintenance, calibration, and testing of systems during commissioning.
  • Direct startups, criticality approach, heatup, power ascension, testing, steady‑state operation, shutdown, cooldown, and response to abnormal or emergency conditions.
  • Conduct shift turnover, status briefings, crew assignments, pre‑job briefs, reactivity‑management briefs, and operating‑risk reviews.
  • Participate in design reviews and provide input to inform design as the end user.
  • Maintain accurate knowledge of plant status, operating limits, out‑of‑service equipment, work in progress, temporary configurations, impairments, and compensatory measures.
  • Enforce procedure use and adherence, three‑way communication, place‑keeping, peer checks, independent verification, component identification, and formal turnover practices.
  • Verify assigned personnel are trained, qualified, fit for duty, and authorized for the work performed.
  • Stop work, delay startup, reject an evolution, reduce power, or direct shutdown when prerequisites, staffing, configuration, procedures, or risk controls are inadequate.
  • Ensure deficiencies, unexpected results, procedure problems, and human‑performance events are entered into the corrective action program and receive appropriate immediate action.
  • Lead initial facility response during abnormal and emergency conditions and fulfill assigned emergency‑response duties.
  • Coach and evaluate crew members and develop future Shift Managers and Senior Reactor Operators.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 10 or more years of progressively responsible nuclear power operations experience, including at least five years in a commercial nuclear power plant control room or licensed operator organization.
  • Current or previously held NRC Senior Reactor Operator license, or documented DOE SRO certification with comparable rigor and substantial commercial control‑room experience.
  • At least three years of supervisory or command experience directing licensed operators or an equivalent nuclear operating crew.
  • Demonstrated experience with reactor startup and shutdown, reactivity control, abnormal and emergency procedures, work control, tagging/clearance, configuration control, and corrective action.
