Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Power Systems Research Engineer to work in our Power and Energy Systems Department within the Energy and Environment Science & Technology (EES&T) Directorate. This senior or staff level position is based on experience and offers a 9x80 schedule located in our Energy Systems Laboratory in Idaho Falls, with every other Friday off.
Responsibilities- Select, apply, and integrate engineering principles with complex engineered systems.
- Design, plan, coordinate, implement, and disseminate projects to technical reports, publications, and national technical meetings.
- Determine or approve technical approaches for the development and testing of engineered solutions.
- Produce proposals and perform business development, including joint projects with industry.
- Collaborate with government agencies, academia, and private sector companies to achieve project goals.
- Develop design documentation, maintenance, and configuration of power systems, and research advanced control or measurement techniques.
- Apply engineering principles to develop operational power systems, including software and hardware.
- Research and develop dynamic and transient modeling and simulations, including machine learning applications.
- Test and validate developed theories and algorithms using digital real-time simulation environments, including hardware-in-the-loop.
- Mentor junior staff and involve them in current projects.
- Level 3:
Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or related field from an ABET-accredited institution and 5 years of relevant experience, or Master’s degree/PhD and 2 years of related experience. - Level 4:
Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or related field from an ABET-accredited institution and 9 years of relevant experience, or Master’s degree and 6 years of related experience, or a PhD and 4 years of related experience.
- Experience with power system testing using digital real-time simulation environments and hardware-in-the-loop.
- Electric grid operations experience, human factors for control rooms, or high-, medium-, and low-voltage direct current experience.
- Pay range:
Level 3 ($95,256 - $195,288) / Level 4 ($114,360 - $234,336). - Multi-level posting – placement depends on depth and breadth of experience and skills.
Stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, bend, and work in an office and laboratory environment. Hand/finger dexterity to type, handle materials, manipulate tools, and reach with hands and arms.
