Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Quality Engineer to work on our Environment, Safety, Health & Quality (ESH&Q) team. Our team works a 9x80 schedule located out of our Idaho Falls facility with (every other Friday off.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities
  • Serve as a subject matter expert and primary contact for INL lab-wide quality assurance programs, processes, and requirements.
  • Conduct, plan, lead, schedule, and report on internal quality program audits, reviews, and surveillances to verify that requirements are identified, incorporated, and effectively implemented.
  • Coordinate, lead, and support stakeholder audit and surveillance activities.
  • Provide oversight and assessment feedback to quality activity process owners, helping to evaluate program effectiveness and identify areas for improvement.
Owner Inspector:
Pressure Piping Systems
  • Verify that project fabrication, examinations, testing, assembly, and erection meet applicable ASME B31.X piping code requirements.
  • Participate in vendor evaluations using sound auditing methods to confirm supplier capability against applicable standards (e.g., NQA-1, INL requirements, ASME B31.X).
Procedure & Program Development
  • Participate in the development and continuous improvement of INL procedures, training materials, and tools to implement contractually applied quality program requirements.
  • Assist INL organizations in applying quality program requirements to specific processes, ensuring consistent and compliant implementation across departments.
Technical Guidance & Stakeholder Interface
  • Provide technical expertise, assistance, and advice to program, project, and facility management on quality compliance and implementation matters.
  • Interact with facility senior management on significant issues requiring coordination across organizational lines.
  • Interface with internal and external customers to confirm that quality needs are understood and met.
  • Provide solutions to resolve facility, program, or project compliance issues.
  • Coach and mentor facility personnel on quality requirements for activities affecting quality.
Required Qualifications
  • Level 3:
    Bachelor’s degree in science, engineering, or a technical field such as Chemistry, Engineering, Statistics, Operations Management, or a closely related degree and (5) years of related experience or masters degree and (2) years of related experience or in lieu of degree 11 years of related experience.
  • Level 4:
    Bachelor’s degree in science, engineering, or a technical field such as Chemistry, Engineering, Statistics, Operations Management, or a closely related degree and (9) years of related experience or masters degree and (6) years of related experience or in lieu of degree 15 years of related experience.
  • Qualify for and maintain INL Quality Engineer Qualification
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "L" clearance, which requires US Citizenship.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Experience
  • A degree in technical field related to Quality (Chemistry, Engineering, or related field).
  • Qualify for and maintain Lead Auditor Qualification
  • Ability to be certified as a VT Level II in accordance with an ASNT SNT-TC-1a
  • Knowledge, understanding, and ability to apply various industry Codes and standards, including but not limited to:
    • ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Codes
    • ASME B31.X Codes
    • Experience or certification in Quality Inspection/Test methods
  • Able to certify as an INL owner’s inspector within 1 year.
    • At least 10 years of experience in design, fabrication, or examination of industrial pressure piping.
    • Have a professional engineering registration or nationally recognized equivalent with at least 5 years of experience in design, fabrication, or examination of industrial pressure piping.
    • Be a certified welding inspector or a senior certified welding inspector with at least 5 years of experience in design, fabrication, or examination of industrial pressure piping.
    • Be an authorized piping inspector as defined in API 570, Piping Inspection Code:
